Nibco NL2IS0A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco T-176-SS bronze gate valve be used on potable water?
No. The T-176-SS is prohibited for use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. Keep it on steam, heating, HVAC and general utility service. For domestic water you need a valve that meets current lead-free requirements.
2) What pressure and steam rating does the Nibco T-176-SS gate valve carry?
600 psi / 41.4 bar non-shock cold working pressure, and 300 psi / 20.7 bar saturated steam up to 421 F / 216 C. That steam rating is what makes it a Class 300 valve rather than a standard 125/200 bronze gate, so it suits medium to high pressure steam mains and HVAC risers.
3) How does the T-176-SS gate valve connect to pipe - threaded or solder?
Threaded only. Both ends are female NPT (FIPT), Class 300, so it screws onto male-threaded steel or brass pipe nipples. There is no solder-end version of this valve, so if you are running copper you will need male adapters at each end.
4) Does the T-176-SS stem rise when you open it, and how much headroom do I need?
It is a non-rising stem design, so the handwheel and stem stay in place as the gate travels inside the body. That is the one to use in a tight chase, close to joists, or where an insulation jacket or wall would foul a rising stem. If you want a visual indication of gate position, a rising stem valve is the better pick.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-176-SS come in?
Two sizes: 1/2 inch (MPN NL2IS06) and 1 inch (MPN NL2IS0A), both female NPT.
6) What is the wedge and trim made of on the Nibco T-176-SS?
The body is bronze with a stainless steel wedge and stainless seating. Nibco also calls out an alloy solid wedge and dezincification resistant construction, which matters on steam and hot water where a plain brass wedge can lose zinc over time.
7) Can the T-176-SS be repacked or serviced in line?
It uses a union bonnet, which threads apart with a union nut so the bonnet and stem assembly can be taken out for repacking or wedge service without cutting the valve out of the line. Screwed-bonnet valves do not give you that.
8) Is the T-176-SS gate valve suitable for throttling flow?
No. It is a gate valve, meant for full-open or full-closed isolation duty. Parking the wedge partway erodes the seating faces and can chatter the gate. Use a globe or ball valve where you need to regulate flow.
9) Does the Nibco T-176-SS meet a recognized valve standard?
It conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard covering bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. That is the reference to cite if your spec or submittal calls for an MSS SP-80 bronze gate valve.
