Nibco NL1M00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco T-134 bronze gate valve on a potable water line?
No. The T-134 is not permitted for U.S. drinking water service after January 3, 2014. Keep it on the non-potable side: hot and cold water outside drinking water systems, HVAC and heating, steam, compressed air, gas and general utility service. For domestic water you need a lead-free valve instead.
2) What pressure and steam rating does the Nibco T-134 gate valve carry?
300 psi (20.7 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 150 psi (10.3 bar) saturated steam to 353 degrees F. That is a Class 150 bronze valve, so it covers typical low pressure steam and condensate work and standard building hydronic loops without oversizing to an iron body valve.
3) How does the Nibco T-134 connect to pipe, and do I need to solder it?
No soldering. The T-134 has female NPT threaded ends (FIPT), Class 150, so it threads straight onto male-threaded steel, brass or copper adapters. If your line is copper and you want a sweat connection, you need the solder-end version of the bronze gate valve, not this one.
4) Do I need overhead clearance to install a rising stem gate valve?
Yes. The T-134 uses a rising stem, so the stem travels up out of the bonnet as the valve opens and you have to leave headroom above the valve equal to roughly the stem travel. The payoff is that you can see whether the valve is open or shut at a glance, which is why rising stem is usually specified in mechanical rooms. In a tight ceiling space or a shallow chase, a non-rising stem valve is the better pick.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-134 gate valve come in?
Ten sizes, 1/4 inch through 3 inch: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Common MRO sizes carry part numbers NL1M006 for 1/2 inch, NL1M008 for 3/4 inch and NL1M00A for 1 inch. Order by NPT pipe size, not by the valve body dimension.
6) Can the Nibco T-134 be repacked or rebuilt in place without cutting it out?
The union bonnet is the reason to buy this one. The bonnet unscrews from the body as a unit, so a maintenance tech can pull the bonnet, stem and wedge to repack or reseat the valve with the body left threaded into the line. A screwed bonnet valve is cheaper up front but far more awkward to service. On a system you expect to maintain for years, the union bonnet pays for itself.
7) Should I use a gate valve or a ball valve for this line?
A gate valve like the T-134 is an isolation valve, full open or full shut, with a solid bronze wedge that gives a straight-through bore and near zero pressure drop when open. Do not throttle with it, partial opening chews the wedge and seat. If you need flow control or fast quarter-turn shutoff, use a ball valve. If you need low restriction isolation on a steam, hydronic or utility line and want a serviceable valve, the gate valve is the right type.
8) Does the Nibco T-134 meet the spec on my drawing for a bronze gate valve?
The T-134 conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard commonly cited on mechanical drawings for bronze gate, globe and check valves. Paired with the Class 150 threaded ends, 300 psi CWP and 150 psi saturated steam rating, plus rising stem, solid wedge and union bonnet construction, it answers the usual line items in a bronze gate valve specification.
9) Will the same Nibco T-134 valve work on both my steam line and my chilled water line?
Yes, one valve covers both. The T-134 is rated 150 psi saturated steam to 353 degrees F and 300 psi cold working pressure, and it is listed for hot and cold water, HVAC, steam, compressed air, gas and general utility service. For a facility standardizing on one bronze isolation valve across a mechanical room, that range is the appeal, so long as none of the lines are potable.
10) Is the Nibco T-134 gate valve suitable for water with aggressive water chemistry that attacks brass?
The T-134 body is bronze and the valve is dezincification resistant, so it holds up in water that strips zinc out of ordinary brass and leaves the fitting porous. Seat and wedge are bronze as well, so there is no dissimilar trim to fail first.
