Nibco NL0J00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a Nibco T-113 bronze gate valve on a potable water line?
No. The T-113 bronze gate valve is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is built for commercial plumbing, heating and HVAC service, plus hot and cold water, steam, compressed air, gas and general utility lines outside potable service. For a domestic water shutoff, order a valve carried as lead-free for potable use.
2) How does the Nibco T-113 gate valve connect to pipe, and do I need to solder it?
No soldering. The T-113 has female NPT threaded ends (FIPT), Class 125, so it threads directly onto male-threaded steel, brass or iron pipe of the matching size. If your line is copper tube, you either need adapters to thread into it or a solder-end bronze gate valve instead.
3) Does the stem on the Nibco T-113 rise when you open it, and how much headroom do I need above the valve?
The T-113 is a non-rising stem design, so the handwheel and stem stay at a fixed height through the full travel. Nothing telescopes up out of the bonnet. That is what lets it go into a tight ceiling pocket, a shallow chase or a crowded mechanical room where a rising stem valve would not have clearance to open. The trade-off: you cannot tell open from shut by looking at the stem, you have to count turns or tag the valve.
4) Does the Nibco T-113 meet the valve standard my mechanical spec calls out?
The T-113 conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard for bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves, at Class 125 threaded ends with a 200 psi CWP rating. That is the reference most commercial mechanical specs cite for a bronze isolation valve on hot and cold water, HVAC and low pressure steam.
5) What pressure and steam rating does the Nibco T-113 gate valve carry?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam to 353 degrees F (178 degrees C). That Class 125 steam rating is what makes it usable on low pressure steam and hot water heating loops as well as chilled water and compressed air.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-113 bronze gate valve come in?
Ten sizes, from 1/4 inch through 3 inch: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Order by the nominal pipe size of the line it threads into. Common MRO stocking sizes here are 1/2 inch (MPN NL0J006), 3/4 inch (NL0J008) and 1 inch (NL0J00A).
7) Should I use a gate valve or a ball valve for a shutoff?
A gate valve like the T-113 is meant for on/off isolation service that sits in one position most of its life, and it gives a straight-through, full-bore flow path with very little pressure drop. Its solid wedge seats slowly, which is easier on a system than the quarter-turn slam of a ball valve on long runs or steam. A ball valve is the better pick where you need fast operation or a visible open/shut indication. Neither should be used for throttling; a globe valve is the throttling device.
8) Is the Nibco T-113 gate valve repackable or serviceable in place, or is it a throwaway?
Screw-in bonnet construction, so the bonnet threads out of the body and the stem, packing and solid bronze wedge can be reached for service rather than cutting the valve out. On a threaded line you can also unthread the whole valve with unions. For a maintenance department standardizing across a building, that is the practical difference between a repackable valve and a disposable one.
9) Will a bronze gate valve hold up in a hard water or aggressive water system without failing at the threads?
The T-113 body, seat and wedge are all bronze, and the alloy is dezincification resistant, which is the failure mode that eats cheaper brass valves in aggressive or high chloride water and leaves porous, crumbling threads. All-bronze trim also means no dissimilar metal in the seating surfaces to gall.
10) Can I install a bronze gate valve horizontally, or does the handwheel have to point up?
Because the T-113 uses a non-rising stem, the stem does not travel out of the bonnet and the valve can be mounted with the handwheel up, sideways or in any orientation the piping gives you. Solid wedge construction means there is no split disc to fall out of alignment when the valve is not vertical. Keep it as an open-or-shut valve; leaving a gate cracked partway open erodes the wedge and seat.
11) Is the Nibco T-113 rated for compressed air and gas lines, or just water?
Beyond hot and cold water and HVAC, the T-113 bronze gate valve is listed for steam, compressed air, gas and other general utility service, at 200 psi non-shock cold working pressure. On a shop air header or a utility gas line that puts it well inside typical system pressures, though gas service always has to satisfy the local authority having jurisdiction for approved valve types.
