Nibco NJ0J00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco S-113 gate valve work on copper tube, or does it need threaded pipe?
Solder only. The S-113 has Class 125 female solder cups on both ends, so it sweats directly onto copper tube. There are no threads on this valve, so if you're tying into threaded steel or need a union at the valve, you want a threaded-end bronze gate valve instead. Sizes run 3/8 inch through 3 inch.
2) What pressure and steam rating does the Nibco S-113 gate valve carry?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam up to 353 degrees F (178 degrees C). That is the Class 125 bronze rating, which covers most commercial hydronic heating, chilled water and low-pressure steam work. If your loop runs above 200 psi cold or above 125 psi steam, this valve is under-rated for it.
3) Do I need headroom above a Nibco S-113 gate valve for the stem to rise?
No, and that's the point of it. The S-113 is a non-rising stem design, so the handwheel stays at a fixed height through the full stroke and the stem doesn't travel up out of the bonnet. That's what lets it go in tight chases, close to joists, or in a bank of valves where a rising-stem valve would hit something on the way open. If you need a visual indication of open or closed position from across the room, a rising stem valve gives you that instead.
4) Is a bronze gate valve the right choice, or should I use a ball valve for this line?
Gate valves like the S-113 are for isolation service, fully open or fully closed, on lines you shut down occasionally for maintenance. The solid wedge seats against bronze and gives a straight-through, low-restriction port when open. What a gate valve is not for is throttling; parking the wedge partway wears the seat and chatters. If you need quarter-turn speed or partial flow control, use a ball valve. For a main shutoff, a riser isolation, or a branch valve you touch twice a year, the gate valve is the standard spec.
5) Can the Nibco S-113 gate valve be rebuilt or repacked in place?
The S-113 uses a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet threads out of the body and the stem, wedge and packing come with it. On a soldered valve, that matters: you can service the internals without unsweating the valve from the line, as long as you can back the bonnet off. Keep in mind the body stays in the piping either way, so plan clearance around the handwheel for a wrench on the bonnet hex.
6) Will a bronze gate valve hold up in a system with aggressive water, or will the zinc leach out?
The S-113 body and trim are bronze and the valve is dezincification resistant, which is the failure mode that eats ordinary brass valves in soft or chlorinated water, the alloy loses its zinc and goes porous and pink. Body, seat seal and wedge are all bronze on this valve, so there's no brass component sitting in the flow path to fail that way. It also conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard bronze gate, globe and check valve spec that mechanical drawings usually call out.
7) What size Nibco S-113 do I order for 3/4 inch copper, and what sizes are made?
Order by the copper tube size the cups accept. The S-113 runs 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch, nine sizes in all. For 3/4 inch copper that's part number NJ0J008. The 1/2 inch is NJ0J006 and the 1 inch is NJ0J00A, the two most common sizes on branch and riser work.
8) Is the Nibco S-113 rated for compressed air and gas lines, not just water?
Yes, the S-113 is listed for hot and cold water, HVAC, steam, compressed air, gas and other general utility service in commercial and industrial buildings, at 200 psi cold working pressure. The limit to watch is the media, not the service: it's a Class 125 bronze valve, so verify the specific gas or chemical against Nibco's chemical resistance data before you commit a whole system to it.
