Nibco NJ05008 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Nibco S-111 gate valve be used on potable drinking water lines?
No. The S-111 bronze gate valve is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is built for commercial and industrial service: hot and cold water (non-potable), HVAC, heating, steam, compressed air, gas and general utility. For potable water you need a lead-free rated valve instead.
2) What kind of pipe connection does the Nibco S-111 gate valve have, and does it need soldering?
Both ends are female solder cups, Class 125 solder end connections, so the valve sweats directly onto copper tube. It has to be brazed or soldered in place, not threaded. If you want a valve you can thread onto IPS pipe or take apart later, this is not the one, look for a threaded-end bronze gate valve.
3) What copper tube size does the Nibco S-111 solder gate valve fit?
It is offered in 3/4 inch pipe size, Nibco part number NJ05008. The cups take 3/4 inch copper tube.
4) Does the S-111 have a rising stem, and how much clearance do I need above it?
Yes, it is a rising stem design, so the stem travels up out of the bonnet as the valve opens. You need vertical headroom above the handwheel for that travel, which matters in tight ceiling spaces or pipe chases. The upside is you can see at a glance whether the valve is open or shut. Where clearance is the problem, a non-rising stem gate valve is the better pick.
5) Does the Nibco S-111 meet the MSS SP-80 spec called out on my mechanical drawings?
Yes, the S-111 bronze gate valve conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard commonly specified for bronze gate, globe and check valves. It is a Class 125 solder end valve, and the body is bronze with dezincification resistant construction.
6) Is the Nibco S-111 gate valve rebuildable in place?
It uses a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet and stem assembly can be unthreaded from the body for packing or wedge service. Because the body ends are soldered into the line, the valve itself stays in the piping while you work on the trim.
7) Should I use a gate valve like the S-111 or a ball valve for an isolation shutoff?
A gate valve like the S-111 is for full-open, full-closed isolation service on lines that stay in one position for long stretches, and it gives near-unobstructed flow with a solid bronze wedge seating against a bronze seat. It is not made for throttling, partial opening wears the wedge and seat. If you need quick quarter-turn operation or frequent cycling, use a ball valve instead.
8) Will the S-111 hold up on a system with aggressive or softened water?
The body is bronze and the valve is built dezincification resistant, which addresses the zinc leaching failure that shows up on brass valves in aggressive water. Wedge and seat are both bronze, so there are no elastomer seats to degrade at the 353 degree F steam limit.
