Nibco NF0J00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco PF-113 gate valve on potable water lines?
No. The PF-113 is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is meant for non-potable service: automatic sprinkler systems, commercial plumbing, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and residential plumbing lines outside potable use. If you need a valve for domestic water, you need a lead-free press gate valve instead.
2) Does the Nibco PF-113 need soldering, or does it press on?
It presses on. Both ends are female press connections, so the valve goes onto copper tube with a pressing tool and jaws, no torch or flux. When the crimp is made correctly an "N" witness mark shows on the fitting, which is your visual check that the joint was pressed. You will need the correct jaw or chain for the tube size you are joining.
3) Does the Nibco PF-113 meet the gate valve spec on my drawings?
The PF-113 conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard for bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves, and it is rated 200 psi non-shock cold working pressure with a solid wedge and screw-in bonnet. If the submittal calls out MSS SP-80 bronze gate valves with press ends, this is the match. Confirm the spec does not also require potable-water lead-free compliance, since this valve is excluded from U.S. drinking water service.
4) What copper tube sizes does the Nibco PF-113 press gate valve come in?
Six sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. The part numbers run NF0J006 (1/2"), NF0J008 (3/4"), NF0J00A (1"), NF0J00B (1-1/4"), NF0J00C (1-1/2") and NF0J00D (2"). Both ends are the same size on every one, so it drops inline without a reducer.
5) Will a non-rising stem gate valve fit in a tight ceiling or wall chase?
That is the reason to pick one. The PF-113 uses a non-rising stem, so the stem turns in place and the handwheel does not climb as the valve opens. Overall height stays the same open or closed, which makes it workable in a joist bay, a chase, or behind an access panel where a rising stem would hit something. The tradeoff is you cannot tell open from closed by looking at the stem.
6) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco PF-113 handle?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, with a maximum service temperature of 250 degrees F. That covers hydronic heating loops, HVAC, and standard commercial plumbing service. It is not a steam valve, and the 200 psi figure is a cold working rating, so pressure capability drops as you approach the temperature limit.
7) Is the Nibco PF-113 a gate valve or a ball valve, and which should I use for shutoff?
It is a gate valve with a solid wedge, built for full-open or full-closed isolation service, not for throttling flow. Fully open it gives close to unrestricted bore with little pressure drop, which is why gate valves are common on mains and sprinkler risers. If you need quarter-turn speed or any partial flow control, a press ball valve is the better choice; partially open gate discs erode.
8) Can the Nibco PF-113 be serviced or does the whole valve get replaced if it leaks?
It has a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet and stem assembly can be taken apart for packing service without cutting the valve out of the line. The body is bronze and dezincification resistant, which matters on systems with aggressive or chlorinated water where standard brass can lose zinc and fail at the threads.
