Nibco NL2I00A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Nibco T-176-A bronze gate valve be used on a steam line?
Yes, steam service is what it is built for. The T-176-A is rated 300 psi / 20.7 bar saturated steam to 421F / 216C, and 600 psi / 41.4 bar non-shock cold working pressure. That covers medium to high pressure steam plus general utility and HVAC service.
2) Is the Nibco T-176-A gate valve approved for potable water?
No. Use of the T-176-A in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Keep it on steam, heating, HVAC and general utility service, and specify a lead-free valve for any potable line.
3) How does the T-176-A gate valve connect to pipe, threaded or soldered?
Threaded only. The T-176-A has Class 300 female NPT (FIPT) threaded ends, so it makes up to male-threaded pipe or nipples. If your line is copper tube, you will need adapters or a solder-end valve instead.
4) Does the Nibco T-176-A need overhead clearance for the stem to rise?
No. It is a non-rising stem design, so the stem turns in place and the handwheel does not travel up as the valve opens. That makes it workable in tight chases, pits and close-spaced pipe racks where a rising stem valve would not clear.
5) Can the T-176-A gate valve be repacked or serviced in line?
It uses a union bonnet, which lets the bonnet be separated from the body for stem and packing service without cutting the valve out of a threaded line. The wedge is a solid alloy wedge and the seating is bronze.
6) What standard does the Nibco T-176-A bronze gate valve conform to?
It conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard covering bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. That is the line to cite on a mechanical submittal along with the Class 300 threaded ends and 300 psi SWP rating.
7) Should I use a gate valve or a ball valve for a steam isolation point?
A gate valve like the T-176-A is an isolation valve: run it fully open or fully closed, not throttled. Its value on steam is the 300 psi saturated steam rating to 421F and the low pressure drop of a full-bore wedge. If you need quarter-turn speed rather than a multi-turn handwheel, a ball valve is the other route, but check that its rating covers your steam temperature.
8) Will a bronze gate valve hold up in a system where dezincification is a concern?
The T-176-A is a dezincification resistant bronze valve with a copper nickel alloy wedge, so it is suited to service water and steam systems where dezincification of lesser yellow-brass parts is a worry.
9) What pipe size is the Nibco T-176-A gate valve available in?
It comes in 1 inch, part number NL2I00A, with female NPT threaded ends. Order male-threaded nipples or adapters to suit the run.
