Check valves prevent backflow by automatically closing when fluid reverses direction. Wafer checks may be installed in horizontal positions (or vertical with flow moving up). Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Choose NIBCO® check valves for the most specified, versatile and economical valve option in commercial, mechanical and industrial applications. NIBCO® check valves are backed by the NIBCO 5-year 125% limited warranty.

Nibco NHDY0XM – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Nibco F-910-B-LF silent check valve be installed vertically, or does it have to be horizontal?
Both work, with one condition: horizontal runs are fine, and vertical runs are fine only where flow is moving up. Never install it in a vertical drop with flow going down. This is a spring-loaded inline silent check with 1/2 psi cracking pressure, so the spring closes the disc on flow reversal rather than relying on gravity, which is why it does not need the swing-check style horizontal-only orientation. On pump discharge, the usual spot is straight off the pump on the upward leg.
2) Should I use a silent check valve like the Nibco F-910-B-LF or a swing check on a pump discharge?
On a pump discharge, the spring-loaded silent check is the one you want. It closes on its own spring at 1/2 psi cracking pressure the instant flow reverses, before the column of water can build velocity backward, which is what kills water hammer when a pump shuts off. A swing check depends on the reverse flow itself to slam the disc shut and it typically has to be horizontal. The F-910-B-LF also installs vertically with flow up, which is where a pump discharge riser usually sits.
3) What pipe sizes does the Nibco F-910-B-LF flanged check valve come in?
Nine sizes, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 inch. All are flanged end connections, so you bolt them between companion flanges rather than threading or soldering. Note the 5 inch is offered, which is worth knowing on older commercial risers where a 5 inch line would otherwise force a reducer.
4) What is the maximum pressure and temperature for the Nibco F-910-B-LF silent check valve?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure and 200 degrees F (93 degrees C) maximum. That covers standard domestic water and most hydronic heating and chilled water service. It rules the valve out of steam and of high temperature boiler applications running above 200 F.
5) Can the seat and disc on a Nibco F-910-B-LF check valve be replaced, or do I have to swap the whole valve?
The seat and disc are renewable, so a valve that starts weeping by can be rebuilt in place instead of cut out and replaced. The seat sealing surface is bronze. For a facility standardizing on one check across a building, that matters more than the first cost, because the flanged body stays in the line and the maintenance is a parts job.
6) What do I need besides the Nibco F-910-B-LF check valve to install it in a flanged line?
It is a flanged valve, so it goes in between two companion flanges, and you supply the bolts, nuts and gaskets for each joint plus the mating flanges if the pipe is not already flanged. Nothing threads or solders. Allow for straight pipe access on both sides so the valve can be drawn out later without cutting, since the seat and disc are renewable and you will want to get at them.
7) What is the body material on the Nibco F-910-B-LF check valve?
Cast iron body with a bronze seat. That combination is what puts it in commercial and industrial water service rather than small-diameter residential work, and it is consistent with the flanged sizes it comes in, 2-1/2 inch up to 14 inch.
8) How much pressure does it take to open a Nibco F-910-B-LF check valve, and will it restrict a low pressure line?
Cracking pressure is 1/2 psi, which is what the spring holds the disc closed with. On a booster or circulating system that is negligible, but on a gravity fed or very low head line it is a real number to account for in the head calculation, because the valve will not pass flow until that 1/2 psi differential exists across it.
