Nibco B49510L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does a Nibco 771-LF companion flange connect to on each end?
One end is a solder cup that takes copper tube, and the other is a Class 150 flange face with bolt holes. It's the adapter you use when a copper line has to land on a flanged pump, valve, backflow assembly, or piece of equipment. Nibco calls the configuration C x Flange, so the tube side is sized for copper tube, not threaded pipe. If your run is threaded iron, this fitting is not the one, you'd want a threaded companion flange instead.
2) Will a Nibco 771-LF Class 150 flange bolt up to a cast iron or steel Class 150 flange on a pump?
Yes. Class 150 is a standardized flange class, so the bolt circle, bolt hole count and face diameter match any other Class 150 flange of the same nominal size regardless of what it's made of. Match the size, use the right gasket for the service, and it mates. The bronze body is what makes it suited to copper systems where you don't want a dissimilar metal joint right at the tube.
3) Do I get bolts, nuts and a gasket with a Nibco 771-LF companion flange?
No. You're buying the flange body only. A flanged joint needs a second mating flange (or the flanged port on your equipment), a gasket rated for the service, and a full set of bolts and nuts sized to the bolt circle. Order those separately, and remember a flange-to-flange joint between two companion flanges takes one gasket and one bolt set for the pair.
4) What is dezincification resistant bronze and why does it matter on a water flange?
Dezincification is when zinc leaches out of a brass alloy in aggressive or chlorinated water, leaving a weak, porous copper skeleton that eventually fails at the threads or the thinnest section. The 771-LF is cast in Nibco's Silicon Performance Bronze alloy, which is dezincification resistant, so it holds up in water chemistry that eats ordinary yellow brass. That's the reason it gets specified on municipal supply, reclaimed water and irrigation work where the water isn't gentle.
5) What design standard does the Nibco 771-LF flange meet for a submittal?
ASME B16.18 is the design standard on the 771-LF, which is the cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings standard. Paired with the Class 150 flange rating and the NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372 potable water certifications, that's the line you put on a submittal for a spec'd job.
6) Should I use a companion flange or a union to connect copper to a pump?
Depends on the size and how often it comes apart. Up to about 2 inches a solder union is quicker and cheaper, but most pumps, backflow preventers and larger valves ship with a flanged port, and then you have no choice: a companion flange is the mating half. Above 2-1/2 inch, flanged is the normal way to make a serviceable break in a copper line. The 771-LF goes to 6 inch, so it covers the range where unions stop being practical.
7) Can I use the Nibco 771-LF bronze flange on a hydronic heating or chilled water line, not just domestic water?
Yes, it's used on heating and HVAC systems as well as commercial and residential plumbing, industrial process, irrigation and fire protection. Being bronze, it's a good match where the piping is copper and you want to avoid a steel-to-copper transition at the equipment. The lead-free certification is required on potable systems and does no harm on a closed loop.
