1) What does the Nibco 672 companion flange actually do in a copper system?
The 672 is the transition piece between soldered copper tube and a bolted flange joint. One end is a solder cup that sweats onto copper tube, the other is a steel flange that bolts to the mating flange on a pump, valve, tank nozzle, or backflow assembly. Nibco lists the end connection as C x Flange, so the copper side takes tube outside diameter into the cup. You use it anywhere the run has to be broken for service instead of cut apart.
2) Will a Nibco 672 flange bolt up to my Class 125 cast iron pump flange?
Yes. The 672 is built to Class 125/150 flange dimensions, which is the standard bolt circle and bolt count used on cast iron Class 125 and steel Class 150 mating flanges of the same nominal size. Match nominal pipe size and you get the same bolt pattern. You supply the gasket and bolts; the flange ships as the fitting only.
3) Is the Nibco 672 flange lead free and approved for potable water?
Lead free, and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which are the drinking water contact and lead content standards. That covers potable domestic water in commercial and residential plumbing. It also gets used on heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial and irrigation systems.
4) Can you solder a copper flange with a steel ring on it without wrecking anything?
You can, and it is the normal method here. The copper adapter is the part you heat and sweat to the tube; the steel flange is a separate ring. Keep the torch on the copper cup, not the steel. Copper side is ASTM B75 alloy C12200 and the flange is ASTM A515 GR70 steel, so the flange face will want protection from flux and, once in service, from corrosion.
5) Should I use a solder companion flange or a threaded flange on a copper line?
On copper tube, the solder companion flange is the direct route: sweat it to the tube and bolt up. A threaded flange means adding a male adapter to the copper first, which puts an extra joint and a dissimilar metal transition in the line. Where the run is already copper and you need a bolted, serviceable break at a pump or valve, the 672 with its solder cup is the fewer-joints answer.
6) Do I need two Nibco 672 flanges, or one?
Depends what you are landing on. Bolting copper tube to an equipment flange that already exists, such as a pump volute or a flanged valve, takes one 672 plus a gasket and bolt set. Joining two copper runs with a bolted, breakable joint takes two facing each other. Gaskets and bolting are not part of the fitting.
7) Is the Nibco 672 flange OK for a hydronic or chilled water system, not just domestic water?
Yes. System use covers heating, HVAC and industrial as well as commercial and residential plumbing, fire protection and irrigation. Pairing it at a circulating pump on a hydronic loop is a standard application, and the copper is dezincification resistant.
