1) How do I connect copper tube to a flanged pump or valve?
A companion flange is what bridges the two. The Nibco 771 has a solder cup on one end and a Class 150 flange face on the other, so you sweat it onto the copper tube and bolt the flange face to the mating flange on the pump, valve, or piece of equipment. That is the whole purpose of the fitting: adapting a solder connection to a flange connection without a threaded adapter in between.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 771 companion flange come in?
Ten sizes, from 3/4 inch up through 6 inch: 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 inch. Size by the copper tube going into the solder cup, not by the bolt circle. The 2 inch is MPN B495406 and the 4 inch is B495706 if you are ordering the common equipment sizes.
3) Will a Class 150 companion flange bolt up to my Class 150 iron pump flange?
Yes. The 771 is built to ASME B16.24, which sets the Class 150 bolt circle, bolt hole count and facing dimensions to match the same Class 150 pattern used on cast iron and steel flanges of the same nominal size. Match the nominal size and the class and the bolt pattern lines up. You supply the bolts, nuts and gasket separately; they are not part of the flange.
4) Can I use the Nibco 771 flange on a potable drinking water line?
No. Use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014, because the C84400 bronze alloy does not meet the current lead-content rule for potable systems. Keep it to non-potable service: hydronic heating, chilled water and HVAC, fire protection, irrigation, and industrial process. For domestic water, you need a lead-free flange instead.
5) Is the Nibco 771 flange copper or bronze?
Cast bronze, ASTM B584 alloy C84400, and it is dezincification resistant. The solder cup takes copper tube the same way a wrought copper fitting does, but the body itself is cast bronze because a flange face needs the wall thickness and the bolt-hole material that thin wrought copper cannot give you.
6) What systems is the Nibco 771 bronze companion flange approved for?
It is catalogued for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and residential plumbing service, with the one hard exception that U.S. drinking water use is prohibited after January 3, 2014. In practice that puts it on boiler and chiller connections, pump takeoffs, and fire and irrigation mains where the medium is not potable.
7) Do I need two companion flanges to make a joint?
It depends on what you are landing against. If you are connecting copper tube to a pump, valve or tank that already has a flanged outlet, you need one 771 plus a gasket and a bolt set. If you are joining two runs of copper tube with a bolted, breakable connection, you need a pair of 771 flanges facing each other, again with a gasket and bolts. Nothing is included with the flange itself except the flange, so plan the gasket and fasteners into the order.
8) Should I use a solder companion flange or a threaded flange on my pump connection?
Go by what the pipe is. The 771 is a solder-end flange, so it belongs on a copper tube system where you are already sweating joints; the cup slips over the tube and you solder it like any other copper fitting. If the run is threaded steel or iron pipe, a solder flange does you no good and you want a threaded companion flange instead. The advantage of the flange either way is that it is a bolted, gasketed connection you can break to pull the pump without cutting pipe.
9) How do I solder a bronze companion flange without wrecking the gasket face?
Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions covering the joint prep and heating procedure, and the cast bronze body of the 771 is heavier than a wrought fitting, so it takes more heat and holds it longer. Solder the flange to the tube before you bolt it to the mating flange, and let it cool before setting the gasket. Follow the Nibco technical data sheets for the engineering and installation detail on the specific size.
10) Is the Nibco 771 flange the right choice for a fire protection riser connection?
Fire protection is one of the listed services for the 771, so a bronze Class 150 solder companion flange is a legitimate way to land copper tube against a flanged fire pump, valve or check. It is built to ASME B16.24 for the Class 150 pattern. Confirm the system pressure class on the drawing is Class 150 before you commit, since a higher class flange will not bolt to it.
