Nibco NJ7500A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco S-413-W bronze swing check valve be installed vertically?
Yes, but only with flow moving up. Swing checks like the S-413-W rely on gravity and flow to seat the disc, so they work in horizontal runs or in vertical runs with upward flow. Install it in a vertical down-flow line and it will not check properly.
2) Is the Nibco S-413-W check valve OK for potable water?
No. The S-413-W is not for drinking water service in the U.S. - use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Specify a lead-free bronze check valve for potable lines and keep this one on non-potable duty such as hydronic heating, chilled water, or industrial service.
3) What pipe do the S-413-W solder ends fit, and what sizes are made?
The ends are female solder cups, so they sweat directly onto copper tube of the matching nominal size. Sizes run 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. There is no threaded version of this model, so a threaded line needs adapters or a different valve.
4) What pressure is the Nibco S-413-W bronze swing check rated for?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi (8.6 bar) steam working pressure - it is a Class 125 valve. The bronze body conforms to MSS SP-80.
5) Why a Buna-N disc instead of an all-bronze check valve disc?
The soft Buna-N nitrile disc on the S-413-W gives a tighter shutoff at low pressures and on lines that may not have enough flow to slam a metal disc home. It is renewable, so the disc can be swapped rather than replacing the valve. Buna-N does limit the service fluid and temperature range compared to a bronze disc, so on high-temperature steam duty an all-bronze disc check is the better pick.
6) Can this check valve be serviced in line, or does it have to be cut out?
It is serviceable. The S-413-W has a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet comes off to reach the internals and the Buna-N disc is renewable. The seat is regrindable as well. Bear in mind the valve itself is soldered into the line, so the body stays put while you work on the trim.
7) How do I order the right size Nibco S-413-W, and what is the part number?
Order by nominal solder size. The part numbers run NJ75004 for 1/4 inch, NJ75005 for 3/8, NJ75006 for 1/2, NJ75008 for 3/4, NJ7500A for 1 inch, NJ7500B for 1-1/4, NJ7500C for 1-1/2 and NJ7500D for 2 inch. All are bronze body, Class 125, with the Buna disc trim package.
8) Does a Y-pattern swing check need extra room in the pipe run?
Yes, plan for it. The S-413-W is a Y-pattern body with an angled bonnet, so it needs clearance above or beside the line to take the bonnet off for service. In trade-off terms, a Y-pattern swing check gives lower pressure drop than an inline spring check but is longer and more position-sensitive - it only works horizontal or vertical with upward flow.
