Sta-Kon F9020 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon F9020 ferrule take?
The F9020 wire ferrule is sized for 10 AWG conductor, which is the 6 mm2 metric equivalent called out in its description. If your conductor is 12 AWG or 8 AWG, this is the wrong ferrule - ferrules are sized one conductor at a time and an oversized barrel will not crimp down reliably.
2) Is the F9020 ferrule insulated, and does that matter in a terminal block?
It is a non-insulated ferrule, so there is no plastic collar on the back end. That makes it shorter and lets it seat in tight terminal blocks and enclosed lug cavities where an insulated collar would bottom out, but it leaves bare strands exposed behind the barrel, so you need the terminal body or separate sleeving to cover that transition.
3) What is the F9020 ferrule made of, and will it work on aluminum conductor?
The barrel is copper, so it is intended for copper stranded conductor. Do not terminate aluminum wire in it - copper-only barrels on aluminum create a dissimilar-metal joint that corrodes and loosens. For aluminum you need a barrel rated AL or AL/CU.
4) Is the Sta-Kon F9020 ferrule UL recognized?
Yes. It carries UL file E489056. If your panel build or MRO spec requires UL-recognized wire terminations, the file number is the reference your inspector or QA group will want on the submittal.
5) Do I need a special crimp tool for a non-insulated 10 AWG ferrule?
Yes. Ferrules need a four-indent or trapezoidal ferrule crimper set to the 6 mm2 / 10 AWG die position. A standard insulated-terminal plier crimper will flatten the barrel instead of forming it, and a flattened ferrule will not hold torque in a terminal screw. The tool is a separate purchase from the ferrule.
6) Why use a ferrule on stranded wire instead of just landing the bare strands in the terminal?
A ferrule bundles the strands into one solid pin so the terminal screw clamps a single body rather than loose wire. That stops strand splay, stops individual strands from backing out or bridging to the next terminal, and keeps the joint from relaxing as the strands settle under the screw. The F9020 does that for 10 AWG copper conductor.
7) What part number do I order and where is the Sta-Kon F9020 made?
Order it as Sta-Kon F9020 - that is the manufacturer part number, and the ferrule is produced in Germany. The finish is bare metallic copper, with no color-coded collar, so sizing is identified by part number rather than by color as it is on insulated ferrules.
