Sta-Kon C483 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a No. 5 ring terminal fit a 10-32 or 1/4-20 stud?
The C483 uses a No. 5 ring, which is drilled for a #5 screw or stud. It will not slide over a 1/4-20 bolt, and it is oversized for a #8 terminal screw if you need the lug captured tightly. Match the ring size to the stud on your breaker, bus, or ground bar before ordering.
2) Is this ring terminal insulated, and does that matter for my application?
No insulation. The C483 is a bare copper rectangular-tongue ring terminal, so the barrel and tongue are exposed metal. That is fine inside a grounded enclosure or on a ground bar, but if the terminal sits where it could be touched or where adjacent phases are close together, you need either an insulated terminal or heat shrink over the barrel after crimping.
3) Is the C483 terminal UL listed for electrical inspection?
It carries UL file E9809. If your AHJ is asking for listed terminations on a panel or equipment ground, that file number is what you cite.
4) Can I use this copper ring terminal on aluminum conductors?
No. The C483 is copper, so it is intended for copper conductors only. Aluminum wire needs a lug rated AL9CU or AL7CU with the appropriate inhibitor compound; putting bare copper directly on aluminum invites galvanic corrosion at the joint.
5) What is the difference between a rectangular tongue ring terminal and a standard round ring tongue?
Both land on a stud, but the rectangular tongue on the C483 gives a flat, squared body instead of a round one. That keeps the lug from spinning when it is packed tight against neighboring terminals on a bus or terminal block, and it sits cleaner in narrow gutters. If you have open space around the stud, a round ring tongue of the same wire range and stud size does the same electrical job.
