Sta-Kon B483 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon B483 ring terminal accept?
The B483 is sized for 16-14 AWG conductors. Stranded wire in that range crimps into the barrel without doubling back; 12 AWG and larger will not seat, and anything smaller than 16 AWG leaves the barrel loose even after crimping, so step down to a 22-16 AWG terminal for those conductors.
2) Is the B483 terminal insulated, and do I need to sleeve it after crimping?
It is a non-insulated terminal, bare copper with no nylon or vinyl sleeve. On a 600 V circuit or anywhere two terminals sit close together on a block, plan on heat shrink or an insulating cap over the barrel, or confirm the enclosure keeps the bare metal out of reach.
3) Can I use the Sta-Kon B483 ring terminal on a 480 V control circuit?
Yes. The terminal carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120, 240, and 480 V control and power work. It is UL listed under file E9809.
4) Ring terminal or fork terminal for a 16-14 AWG motor control connection?
Use the ring. The B483 is a closed rectangular ring tongue, so it cannot back off the stud if the screw loosens, which is why ring tongues are specified on motor starters, panel studs and anything that vibrates. A fork or spade terminal only makes sense where you need to pull a wire off without fully removing the screw, like test gear or frequently reworked trim panels.
5) Will the B483 work on aluminum wire?
No. It is a copper terminal, listed for copper conductors. Aluminum branch or feeder wire needs a terminal marked AL or AL/CU with the proper inhibitor compound.
6) Do I need a special crimper for Sta-Kon non-insulated terminals?
Non-insulated barrels crimp with a non-insulated (bare terminal) die, not the color-coded insulated nests. Sta-Kon tooling matches the barrel; using an insulated-terminal die on a bare barrel under-forms the crimp and the connection pulls out. There is no solder step, the connection is crimp only.
7) Is the Sta-Kon B483 made in the USA for Buy American jobs?
Country of origin is the United States, which is what government, transit and other domestic-preference specs ask for on wire termination hardware. UL file E9809 covers the listing side.
