Sta-Kon C77U – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon C77U ring terminal take?
The C77U is sized for 12-10 AWG stranded or solid copper conductor. If you're terminating 14-16 AWG or 8 AWG, this barrel won't crimp properly and you need a different size terminal.
2) What stud size does the C77U ring fit?
The ring tongue is drilled for a No. 8 stud, so it lands on a #8 screw or terminal post. A #10 stud won't pass through the ring.
3) Why would I use a 90 degree ring terminal instead of a straight one?
The C77U's tongue is bent 90 degrees to the barrel, so the wire runs parallel to the mounting surface instead of straight into the stud. That's what you want in a tight panel, a motor junction box, or behind a device where a flag or right-angle approach keeps you from putting a sharp bend in the conductor right at the crimp. If the wire comes in line with the stud, use a straight ring terminal instead.
4) Is the Sta-Kon C77U insulated?
No. It's a bare, non-insulated copper ring terminal. The barrel and tongue are exposed metal, so on anything live you'll want to sleeve the crimp with heat shrink or install it inside an enclosure where spacing is controlled.
5) Do I need a special crimper for a non-insulated Sta-Kon ring terminal?
Yes, a non-insulated barrel needs a crimp die for bare terminals in the 12-10 AWG range. The color-coded nests on an insulated-terminal crimper are the wrong profile and will not form the barrel correctly. No tool is supplied with the terminal.
6) What is the C77U terminal made of?
Copper. That keeps the connection to a copper conductor a like-metal joint, which avoids the galvanic issue you get pairing copper wire with aluminum lugs. It is made in the United States.
7) Is the C77U the right terminal for a ground bond to a #8 screw?
It works for that: 12-10 AWG copper conductor crimped into a bare copper ring that bolts under a #8 ground screw. The 90 degree tongue helps when the ground screw sits on a surface the wire runs along rather than into.
