Sta-Kon B85M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon B85M ring terminal accept?
The B85M takes 18 to 14 AWG stranded copper wire. If you're terminating 12 AWG or larger, this barrel won't crimp down on it correctly, so step up to a terminal rated for that range instead.
2) What stud or screw size does the B85M ring fit?
It's a No. 6 ring, so it drops over a #6 screw or stud. Anything larger won't pass through the tongue, and on a larger stud you'd want the matching bigger ring size rather than forcing this one.
3) Does the B85M come loose or on a belt for a crimping machine?
It's a belted terminal, supplied on a continuous strip for feeding into a powered or semi-automatic applicator rather than crimped one at a time with a hand tool. If you're doing field service out of a pouch, loose-piece terminals are the easier buy; the belt makes sense when you're producing harnesses or panel wiring in volume.
4) Is this ring terminal insulated, and do I need to add anything after crimping?
Non-insulated. The B85M is bare copper with no sleeve, so if the terminal sits where it could short against an adjacent stud or a metal enclosure wall, plan on heat shrink or a separate insulating sleeve over the barrel. Many panel builders prefer non-insulated for exactly this reason: you can see the wire in the barrel and inspect the crimp.
5) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal for a #6 screw?
A ring like the B85M has to come off the stud completely, which means loosening or removing the screw, but it cannot vibrate loose off the connection. A fork or spade slides in sideways under a partly loosened screw, which is faster for service work but can walk out under vibration. For permanent terminations, motor leads, grounds, and anything that sees movement, the ring is the right call.
6) Is the Sta-Kon B85M UL recognized?
Yes, it carries UL file E9809. That matters if you're building a panel or doing institutional work where the inspector wants listed terminations throughout.
7) Is the B85M copper or aluminum, and can I put it on aluminum conductors?
The barrel is copper, so it's intended for copper conductors. Don't use it on aluminum wire, that needs a terminal rated AL/CU with the proper inhibitor compound.
8) Is the Sta-Kon B85M made in the USA?
Country of origin is the United States. Useful if you're on a government or institutional job with domestic-content requirements on the bill of materials.
