Sta-Kon B87M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon B87M ring terminal accept?
The B87M takes 18 to 14 AWG stranded or solid copper conductor. If you're terminating 12 AWG or larger, this barrel won't crimp down properly and you need the next size up in the Sta-Kon ring terminal range.
2) Is this a non-insulated terminal, and do I need to add insulation after crimping?
Correct, the B87M is a bare copper ring terminal with no insulating sleeve over the barrel. Where code or the panel spec calls for a covered termination, add heat shrink or a nylon insulating cap over the crimped barrel after you terminate.
3) What voltage is this ring terminal rated for?
600 V. That covers standard panelboard, control panel, and 120/208/240/480 V branch wiring terminations.
4) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on a No. 10 terminal screw?
A ring like the B87M has to come off the stud to be removed, which is why it's specified on vibration-prone and safety-critical connections, automotive grounds and panel studs included. A fork or spade slides out from under a loosened screw, which is faster for service work but can back out. For harness and panelboard terminations where the connection stays put, the ring is the right call.
5) Is the B87M copper, and can I use it on aluminum conductor?
The body is copper, so it's for copper conductor only. Aluminum wire needs an AL/CU rated connector; crimping aluminum into a copper-only barrel sets up a dissimilar-metal joint that corrodes and heats.
6) Why does the B87M say belt, and does that change how I crimp it?
Belted means the terminals come connected on a carrier strip for feeding an automatic or semi-automatic applicator, the way a harness shop or panel shop runs volume. The finished crimp is the same 18-14 AWG, No. 10 ring; if you're working by hand off the strip, break them loose and use a Sta-Kon hand tool sized for 18-14 non-insulated barrels.
7) Are these Sta-Kon terminals made in the USA?
Yes, the B87M is manufactured in the United States, which matters if you're buying against a domestic-preference or Buy American line on a government or institutional purchase order.
