Sta-Kon A87M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon A87M ring terminal accept?
The A87M ring terminal is sized for 22 to 16 AWG stranded or solid copper conductors. If your conductor is 14 AWG or larger, this barrel won't crimp down on it correctly and you need the next size up in the Sta-Kon range.
2) What stud size does the A87M ring terminal fit?
The ring on the A87M is sized for a No. 10 stud or screw. That makes it a match for a 10-32 or 10-24 terminal block screw, ground screw, or panel stud. It will slip over a smaller 8-32 screw but won't seat properly under the head of a larger 1/4-20.
3) Is the Sta-Kon A87M insulated, and does that matter for my application?
It's a non-insulated terminal, bare copper with no plastic or nylon sleeve. That means no color-coded barrel to identify wire range by sight, and no strain relief at the wire entry. Use it where the connection sits inside an enclosure or terminal strip, or where you'll add heat shrink yourself. If the lug will be exposed near other live terminals, choose an insulated ring terminal instead.
4) Why would I pick a ring terminal over a fork or spade terminal for a panel connection?
A ring terminal like the A87M is a closed barrel ring, so the screw has to come all the way out to remove it. That is the point: it can't vibrate or pull off the stud sideways. Spade and fork terminals slide out from under a loosened screw, which is faster for service work but not what you want on equipment grounds, motor connections, or anything that sees vibration. For a No. 10 stud carrying 22-16 AWG in a control panel or on a chassis ground, the ring is the connection that stays put.
5) Is the Sta-Kon A87M UL listed?
Yes, the terminal carries UL file E9809. That is the reference an inspector or a spec writer will want if you're terminating control or signal wiring in a listed panel.
6) What does the "M" and the Mylar reference on the A87M mean?
The Mylar designation refers to how the A87M terminals are supplied, taped on Mylar carrier strip rather than loose in a bag. That is the feed format for strip-fed and semi-automatic crimp machines used in production harness work. If you're crimping by hand with a Sta-Kon hand tool, loose-piece terminals are the easier buy.
7) Can I use the A87M on aluminum wire?
No. The A87M barrel is copper, so it's intended for copper conductors only. Terminating aluminum in a copper-only lug risks galvanic corrosion and a high-resistance joint. For aluminum you need a lug marked AL or AL9CU.
8) Are Sta-Kon A87M terminals made in the USA?
Country of origin is the United States. That matters on federal, state, and institutional jobs carrying Buy American or domestic-content requirements, where the submittal needs the origin on record.
