Sta-Kon A86M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon A86M ring terminal crimp onto?
The A86M takes 22 to 16 AWG stranded copper wire. That covers most control wiring, thermostat and low-voltage runs. If you're terminating 14 AWG or heavier, you need a larger barrel terminal, not this one.
2) What stud or screw size does the A86M ring fit?
It's a No. 8 ring, so it drops over a #8 stud or screw. Common on control panel terminal blocks, small ground screws and device terminals. A #10 stud will not pass through it.
3) Is the Sta-Kon A86M insulated?
No. The A86M is a bare, non-insulated ring terminal. If the termination sits in a panel where adjacent live parts are close, you'll want to add heat shrink or sleeving yourself, or specify an insulated ring terminal instead.
4) What is the A86M terminal made of, and will it work on a copper ground conductor?
Copper construction, so it's matched to copper conductors and avoids the dissimilar-metal issue you get pairing aluminum lugs with copper wire. It's rated for 22-16 AWG copper.
5) What does the Mylar on the Sta-Kon A86M mean, and does it change how I install it?
Mylar refers to the carrier tape the terminals come on, which is how they feed into a reel-fed or automatic crimp machine. Electrically and dimensionally it's the same 22-16 AWG No. 8 non-insulated ring. If you're crimping by hand, you just break them off the strip.
6) Should I use a ring terminal like the A86M or a fork/spade terminal on my panel terminal block?
A ring terminal has to come off the stud to be removed, which is why it's the choice where vibration or an accidental pull could back a connection out, including ground screws. A fork or spade slides out from under a loosened screw, which is faster for service but less secure. The A86M is the ring version for 22-16 AWG wire on a No. 8 stud.
7) Are Sta-Kon A86M ring terminals made in the USA?
Yes, country of origin is the United States. That matters on government, federal and some institutional contracts carrying domestic-sourcing requirements.
