Sta-Kon A480 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon A480 ring terminal accept?
The A480 is sized for 22 to 18 AWG stranded or solid copper conductor. Anything heavier than 18 AWG will not seat in the barrel, and a conductor smaller than 22 AWG won't crimp reliably, so step to the correct color-coded size range for those wires.
2) What stud or screw size does the A480 ring terminal fit?
It is a No. 8 ring tongue, so it goes over a #8 stud or screw. On a terminal block or ground lug with a #10 screw, the ring will slip over but won't be captured properly, and on a #6 it won't pass at all.
3) Is the Sta-Kon A480 insulated or does it need its own insulation?
It is a non-insulated terminal, bare copper with a metallic finish. There is no nylon or vinyl sleeve, so if the connection needs strain relief or coverage you add heat shrink or a separate insulating cap after crimping. In enclosed panels and on ground points that is often not required at all, which is why the non-insulated version gets specified.
4) Why choose a ring terminal instead of a fork or spade for control panel wiring?
A ring tongue like the A480 has to be unbolted to come off, so it cannot vibrate loose or pull out sideways from under a screw head. That makes it the choice for ground connections, motor terminals, and anything subject to vibration. A fork or spade terminal installs faster on a crowded terminal strip because you don't have to back the screw all the way out, but it will back off under movement. For 22-18 AWG control and signal wiring landing on #8 screws, the ring is the safer termination.
5) Does a non-insulated Sta-Kon ring terminal need a special crimp tool?
It needs a crimper matched to non-insulated terminals, not the color-coded insulated-terminal jaws. Insulated dies crimp over a sleeve this terminal doesn't have, and will deform the bare 22-18 AWG barrel instead of forming a proper indent. Use a non-insulated Sta-Kon style tool and the die position for 22-18 AWG.
6) Will the A480 work for grounding a small device with 18 gauge wire?
It will, as long as the ground screw is a #8. The barrel takes 18 AWG copper and the copper body carries the bond without a dissimilar-metal issue at a copper or plated connection point. For a green-wire ground where the screw is #10, go to the equivalent No. 10 ring instead.
7) Is the Sta-Kon A480 made in the USA?
Yes, country of origin is the United States. That matters on federal, Buy American, and some institutional procurement work where domestic origin is a line item on the submittal.
