1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon A482 ring terminal crimp onto?
The A482 is sized for 22-18 AWG stranded or solid copper conductor. Anything heavier than 18 AWG will not seat in the barrel, and a wire thinner than 22 AWG will not hold a proper crimp, so step to the next barrel size if your conductor falls outside that range.
2) Will a Sta-Kon A482 terminal fit a No. 8 screw or stud?
Yes. The A482 ring tongue is drilled for a No. 8 stud or screw, which is the common size on control panel terminal blocks, ground screws, and small motor terminals. It will slip over a smaller No. 6 stud but the ring will float; it will not pass a No. 10.
3) Is the A482 ring terminal insulated, and does that matter in a crowded panel?
It is a non-insulated terminal, bare copper with no nylon or vinyl sleeve over the barrel. In a tight enclosure where conductors bundle against each other or against a grounded surface, you either sleeve the crimp with heat shrink yourself or specify an insulated ring tongue instead. Where terminations are spaced on a block, bare is normal and lets you inspect the crimp.
4) What voltage is the Sta-Kon A482 rated for?
600 V, which covers line voltage branch circuits, motor control, and 120/208/240/480 V panel work. For low voltage signal and 24 V control wiring it is equally fine, the rating is a ceiling not a requirement.
5) Why choose a rectangular ring tongue instead of a fork or spade terminal?
The rectangular ring tongue is a closed ring, so the connection cannot vibrate off the stud even if the nut backs off slightly. A fork or spade slides out from under a loosened screw. On motor leads, equipment grounds, and anything subject to vibration, specify the ring. The fork only earns its place where you need to drop a conductor onto a captive screw without removing the screw entirely.
6) Is the Sta-Kon A482 copper, and can I use it on aluminum conductor?
The barrel is copper, so it is for copper conductor only. Crimping copper onto aluminum wire sets up a dissimilar metal joint that corrodes and loses contact pressure over time. Aluminum needs an AL/CU rated terminal with the right inhibitor compound.
