Sta-Kon BC14-12 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon BC14-12 ring terminal accept?
The BC14-12 is sized for 16-14 AWG stranded copper conductor. Anything larger (12 AWG and up) will not seat in the barrel, and 18 AWG and smaller will not crimp reliably in it, so match the terminal to the actual conductor rather than to the lug stud.
2) Does a non-insulated ring terminal need anything else to finish the termination?
Two things. The BC14-12 has no insulating sleeve over the barrel, so if the connection is in a panel or box where adjacent conductors or a metal enclosure could touch it, you add heat shrink or tape yourself. It is also a crimp terminal, not a set screw lug, so you need a crimp tool matched to a 16-14 AWG non-insulated barrel.
3) Is this ring terminal rated for 600 volt circuits?
Yes, the Sta-Kon BC14-12 carries a 600 V rating and is UL recognized under file E9809. That covers standard commercial branch circuit and control panel work.
4) Should I use a non-insulated or a vinyl insulated ring terminal for panel work?
Non-insulated, like the BC14-12, is what you want where the barrel will be heat shrunk, where the terminal has to fit into a tight stud stack, or where a heavy-duty copper barrel is specified. An insulated ring terminal is the easier choice for loose field wiring and bundled harnesses because the sleeve handles strain relief and color codes the wire range for you. The BC14-12 is the heavy-duty bare copper version.
5) What is the Sta-Kon BC14-12 made of, and can I use it on an aluminum conductor?
The barrel is copper, uncoated bare metal finish. That makes it a copper-only terminal, so it should not be used on aluminum conductors, which require a dual rated AL9CU connector with the right inhibitor. Terminal is made in the United States.
