Sta-Kon BC14-6 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon BC14-6 ring terminal take?
The BC14-6 is sized for 16 to 14 AWG stranded or solid copper conductor. Anything thinner than 16 AWG won't be gripped properly by the barrel, and 12 AWG won't enter it, so step up to a 12-10 AWG terminal for heavier wire.
2) Can I use the Sta-Kon BC14-6 terminal on a 480V motor control circuit?
Yes. The BC14-6 ring terminal carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120, 208, 240, 277 and 480 V control and power circuits. Because the barrel and tongue are bare copper with no insulating sleeve, keep the required clearance or sleeve the joint yourself where terminals sit close together.
3) Is this a non-insulated terminal, and when would I choose it over a vinyl or nylon insulated ring?
The BC14-6 is a non-insulated, heavy-duty ring terminal in bare copper, metallic finish. Pick the non-insulated version when the joint will be heat shrunk afterward, when it sits inside a panel where the sleeve color is irrelevant, or when the terminal block spacing is too tight for an insulated barrel. Choose an insulated ring instead if you need built-in strain relief at the wire entry and color coding by gauge.
4) Do I need a special crimper for the Sta-Kon BC14-6, or will my hand tool work?
The BC14-6 is a heavy-duty non-insulated barrel, so it needs the non-insulated die nest on your crimper, not the color-coded insulated nest. Using an insulated-terminal die on a bare heavy-duty barrel under-forms the crimp. Set the tool to the 16-14 AWG position to match the terminal's wire range.
5) Can I use the BC14-6 copper ring terminal on an aluminum conductor?
No. The BC14-6 barrel is copper, which makes it a copper-only connector. Aluminum conductors need a terminal rated AL9CU or AL7CU with the correct inhibitor compound. Putting bare copper directly on aluminum invites galvanic corrosion at the joint.
6) Is the BC14-6 ring terminal made in the USA? We have a domestic sourcing requirement.
Country of origin on the BC14-6 is the United States, so it suits procurement specs that call for domestically manufactured electrical components. The terminal is copper construction rated to 600 V.
