Sta-Kon BC14-8 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon BC14-8 ring terminal crimp?
The BC14-8 is sized for 16-14 AWG conductors. Anything heavier than 14 AWG won't seat in the barrel and anything lighter than 16 AWG will pull out of the crimp, so match the terminal to the actual conductor gauge, not the insulation diameter.
2) Is this Sta-Kon ring terminal UL listed for inspected commercial work?
The BC14-8 carries UL file E9809, so it can be used on inspected commercial and institutional installations where UL recognized terminations are called for.
3) Is this Sta-Kon ring terminal insulated, and does that matter for my application?
No insulation on the BC14-8. It's a bare, non-insulated heavy-duty ring terminal in metallic copper, which is what you want where the connection will be covered by heat shrink, a boot, or an enclosed terminal block. If the terminal sits in open air near adjacent live studs, use an insulated ring instead or shrink over the barrel yourself.
4) Will a ring terminal work better than a fork terminal on a vibrating motor or panel connection?
Yes, on anything subject to vibration a ring is the right choice. A fork or spade can back out from under a loosening screw head; the closed ring on the BC14-8 stays captive on the #8 stud even if the nut backs off slightly. Use a fork only where you need to drop the wire off without fully removing the screw.
5) Is the BC14-8 copper terminal suitable for aluminum conductors?
No. The barrel is copper, so it's for copper conductors only. Aluminum wire needs an AL or AL/CU rated terminal to avoid galvanic corrosion at the crimp.
6) Do I need a special crimper for the non-insulated BC14-8 terminal?
Non-insulated terminals crimp with a bare-terminal (non-insulated) die, not the color-coded insulated nests. The dies are different geometry, and crimping a bare barrel in an insulated nest gives a loose termination. A non-insulated 16-14 AWG die is what you want for this one.
7) Is the Sta-Kon BC14-8 made in the USA for Buy American projects?
Country of origin on the BC14-8 is the United States, which matters on federal, municipal and some institutional jobs with domestic sourcing requirements.
