Sta-Kon NW81 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon NW81 ring terminal accept?
The NW81 is sized for 16-14 AWG stranded wire. If you are terminating 12-10 AWG or 22-18 AWG, this barrel won't crimp properly, so you need the terminal built for that range instead.
2) Will the Sta-Kon NW81 fit a #6 screw or stud?
Yes. The NW81 ring tongue is drilled for a No. 6 stud or screw, so it drops over a #6 terminal block screw, ground screw, or stud. A #8 or 1/4-20 stud will not pass through the ring.
3) What voltage can I use these Sta-Kon ring terminals on?
The NW81 carries a 600 V rating, which covers standard commercial control panels, motor circuits, and lighting work at 120/208/240/480 V. Note it is a non-insulated terminal, so the crimp barrel is bare metal and you supply the insulation yourself with heat shrink or a nylon sleeve if the application needs it.
4) Should I use a non-insulated ring terminal or an insulated one?
A non-insulated ring terminal like the NW81 is what you want where the connection sits inside an enclosure or terminal block, where you plan to cover the barrel with heat shrink, or where high temperature rules out a vinyl or nylon sleeve. If the splice is exposed and you want the insulation built in and color-coded to wire size, order an insulated ring terminal in the 16-14 AWG range instead.
5) Why choose a ring terminal instead of a fork or spade terminal?
A ring tongue has to be unbolted to come off, so it cannot vibrate or slide out from under a loosened screw. That makes the NW81 the right choice for ground connections, motor and equipment terminations, and anything subject to vibration. A fork terminal only makes sense when you need to pull the wire off a crowded terminal strip without fully backing out the screw.
6) Do I need a special crimp tool for the Sta-Kon NW81?
Non-insulated terminals like the NW81 crimp with a non-insulated (open-barrel style dies are not used here; use the bare-terminal nest) crimper, not the red/blue/yellow color-coded insulated jaws. Using an insulated-terminal die on a bare barrel gives an under-formed crimp. Match the tool nest to 16-14 AWG.
7) What is the Sta-Kon NW81 ring terminal made of?
The NW81 is a nickel alloy terminal with a bare metallic finish. There is no plating color or insulation to match, so it looks the same as any other bare terminal on the strip once installed.
