Sta-Kon NW52 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon NW52 ring terminal crimp onto?
The NW52 ring terminal takes 20-18 AWG stranded wire. It's a single-range crimp, so anything heavier than 18 AWG won't seat in the barrel and anything lighter than 20 AWG will pull out even after a proper crimp. For control wiring, thermostat leads, and low-current signal runs in that gauge band it's the right size.
2) Can I use the Sta-Kon NW52 on a 480V motor control circuit?
It's rated 600 V, so a 480 V control or power circuit is within rating. Keep in mind it's a non-insulated terminal, meaning the barrel and tongue are bare metal. On anything above low-voltage control work you need to provide the insulation yourself with heat shrink or an insulating cap, or rely on an enclosed terminal block or device where no live metal is exposed.
3) I need a terminal for a hot location like an oven, heater, or luminaire. Is this the right one?
That's the application this one is built for. The NW52 is a high-temperature, non-insulated ring in nickel alloy, so it goes where an insulated vinyl or nylon barrel would soften or char, such as heating element leads, commercial cooking equipment, and high-temp fixture terminations. It handles 20-18 AWG wire on a No. 8 stud at up to 600 V.
4) Is the NW52 an insulated or bare ring terminal, and does that matter for my panel?
Bare, non-insulated. There's no nylon or vinyl sleeve over the barrel, so after crimping the wire strands and the barrel are exposed. In a crowded panel or junction box that means you either shrink-sleeve the barrel or make sure the connection lands under a shield or inside an enclosed block. If you want the color-coded insulated version for quick gauge identification, that's a different terminal entirely, not this part.
5) What is the Sta-Kon NW52 ring terminal made of?
Nickel alloy, with a metallic finish rather than a plated color coding. The nickel alloy construction is what suits it to high-temperature service, which is the "HTM" in the part description, so it holds up at terminations that run hotter than a standard tin-plated copper lug would tolerate.
6) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on a No. 8 terminal screw?
A ring like the NW52 has to come off the stud entirely to be removed, which is exactly why it's specified where vibration or an accidental tug could unseat a connection, such as motor leads, controls, and equipment grounds. A fork or spade slides out from under a loosened screw, which is faster for service work but can back out. If code or the equipment spec calls for a connection that cannot shake free, go with the ring.
7) Do I need a special crimp tool for the NW52, or will pliers work?
Sta-Kon non-insulated terminals are crimped with a non-insulated die nest, not with pliers. Insulated-terminal dies are the wrong profile for a bare barrel and leave an under-formed crimp that loses pullout strength. Use the non-insulated station of a ratcheting crimper matched to the 20-18 AWG range.
