Sta-Kon G971U – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon G971U ring terminal take?
The G971U is sized for 2 AWG wire (listed as wire size 2/2AN). It is a tubular barrel lug, so the conductor is stripped and inserted into the barrel, then crimped. It will not hold smaller conductors reliably in that barrel, so for 4 AWG or 6 AWG feeders you need the terminal built for that gauge instead.
2) Can I use the Sta-Kon G971U on aluminum conductors?
No. The G971U is a copper terminal, and copper-only lugs are not rated for aluminum conductors. For aluminum feeders you need a lug marked AL9CU or AL7CU, used with the correct inhibitor compound.
3) Why would I use a 90 degree ring terminal instead of a straight one?
The 90 degree bend turns the conductor out of plane with the stud, so the wire runs along the panel or chassis face rather than straight into it. That is what you want in a shallow enclosure, a crowded gutter, or when landing on a bus bar where a straight lug would force a sharp bend in a stiff 2 AWG conductor. If you have room for the cable to approach the stud in line, a straight ring tongue is the simpler part.
4) Is the G971U insulated, and does that matter for my application?
It is a non-insulated copper lug, bare barrel and bare tongue. On 2 AWG in a panel that usually means you add heat shrink or tape over the barrel after crimping, or you rely on clearance inside the enclosure. If you need the insulation built in, specify an insulated lug instead rather than trying to sleeve this one as an afterthought.
5) Do I need a special crimper for this 2 AWG tubular lug?
Yes. A tubular barrel lug in 2 AWG is not a hand-squeeze part. It takes a hydraulic or heavy mechanical crimper with the die matched to the barrel, and the crimp is what makes the connection, not the bolt. Plan the tool before the part, since an under-crimped 2 AWG lug is a heat problem later.
