Sta-Kon NW51 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon NW51 ring terminal accept?
The NW51 is sized for 20-18 AWG stranded or solid conductor. That is the control-wiring and small-gauge range, so it will not grip 16 AWG or larger. For heavier conductors you need a larger barrel terminal in the same family.
2) Is the Sta-Kon NW51 insulated, and does that matter for my application?
It is a non-insulated ring terminal, bare metal barrel with no sleeve. That means no color-coded insulation and no strain relief at the wire entry, so it is used where the connection is inside an enclosure or where heat shrink or tape is applied separately. If you want the insulated barrel for general field wiring, choose an insulated ring terminal instead.
3) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork/spade terminal on my terminal strip?
A ring terminal like the NW51 is the closed-barrel choice: the screw has to come all the way out to remove it, so the wire cannot vibrate off the stud. That is why it is specified on motor connections, ground studs, and anything in a high-vibration location. A fork or spade slides out from under a loosened screw, which is faster for service work on a crowded terminal block but less secure. This one lands on a No. 6 screw.
4) What is the NW51 terminal made of?
Nickel alloy. That is what distinguishes it from the common tin-plated copper ring terminal: nickel alloy is the material used where the termination sees elevated temperature, such as heater, oven, and furnace wiring, rather than ordinary low-temp control circuits.
5) Do I need a special crimp tool for the Sta-Kon NW51?
It is a crimp-on barrel terminal for 20-18 AWG, so it needs a crimper with a non-insulated die in that gauge range. Pliers or an insulated-terminal nest will not form the barrel correctly and the pull-out strength suffers. The ring itself then installs under a No. 6 screw or stud.
6) Is the Sta-Kon NW51 made in the USA for Buy American projects?
Country of origin on the NW51 is the United States, which is what government, transit, and federally funded institutional buyers need documented on domestic-sourcing jobs.
