1) Will a Metallics JSN18 hex nut thread onto a 1/2 inch bolt with standard UNC threads?
Yes. The JSN18 is a 1/2-13 hex nut, meaning 1/2 inch nominal diameter at 13 threads per inch, which is the standard coarse thread for a 1/2 inch bolt. It's made to ANSI/ASME B18.2.2, the dimensional standard for hex nuts, so it mates with any 1/2-13 coarse threaded rod, bolt, or stud cut to the same standard. If your rod is 1/2-20 fine thread, this is the wrong nut.
2) Is 18-8 stainless good enough for hanging conduit and pipe outdoors or in a wet area?
18-8 stainless is what the JSN18 nut is made from, and it's the corrosion resistant austenitic grade used across electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work, including damp and exterior locations. For coastal salt air, chlorides, pool chemistry, or elevated temperature service, 316 stainless holds up better and keeps more strength when hot. For ordinary outdoor conduit racks, strut runs, and mechanical hangers, 18-8 is the normal choice.
3) Can I use stainless nuts on a galvanized or zinc plated bolt?
Match the nut to the bolt. The JSN18 is meant to run on stainless steel bolts and screws whose specified minimum tensile strength is equal to or less than the proof stress of the nut. Putting a stainless nut on a plated carbon steel bolt mixes metals in a wet location and can set up galvanic corrosion, and it also means the assembly's strength is governed by whichever part is weaker rather than by a matched pair. Run stainless with stainless.
4) Are Metallics JSN18 stainless hex nuts Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JSN18 hex nut is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and its country of origin is listed as multiple. If you're on a federally funded project with domestic sourcing language in the spec, this nut will not satisfy it and you need a domestically produced stainless hex nut instead.
5) What wrench or socket size do I need for a 1/2-13 stainless hex nut?
Measure across the flats: the JSN18 runs 0.840 to 0.866 inch wide, which puts a 3/4 inch wrench or socket on it. Height across the nut is 0.427 to 0.448 inch, so a standard depth socket clears it on a threaded rod drop without needing a deep socket unless the rod protrudes.
6) How many nuts come in a jar of Metallics JSN18, and can I buy fewer than that?
