OATEY 21212 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use Oatey 21212 40/60 rosin core solder on potable water lines?
No. The 21212 is a leaded solder, 40% tin and 60% lead, and it is expressly not for use on drinking water lines. If you are sweating copper for domestic water, you need a lead-free solder instead. The 21212 is for non-potable work only, and it cannot be sold or used in Indiana or Pennsylvania.
2) Is 40/60 the same as 60/40 solder, and which one is this?
They are different alloys and the numbers are the tin/lead split. The 21212 is the 40/60 alloy: 40% tin, 60% lead, with a 361 to 460 degree F range. The 60/40 alloy runs the other way, 60% tin and 40% lead, and melts across a much tighter 361 to 375 degree F band. The wider range on 40/60 means a longer pasty stage as it cools, which is what you want for wiping a joint but not for a fast clean fillet.
3) Can a facility in Indiana or Pennsylvania buy Oatey 21212 solder?
No. The 21212 leaded rosin core solder cannot be sold or used in Indiana or Pennsylvania. Institutional and MRO buyers stocking across multiple states need to keep it off the shelf list for those two, and substitute a lead-free solder there.
4) What temperature does Oatey 21212 solder melt at, and will a propane torch handle it?
The melting range is 361 to 460 degrees F. That is well within what a standard propane torch delivers, so no MAPP or acetylene is required for this alloy. The 361 degree figure is the solidus, where it starts to soften, and it is fully liquid by 460.
5) Do I need separate flux with Oatey 21212 rosin core solder?
The flux is inside the wire. Rosin core means the solder carries a rosin flux in the center of the strand, released as it melts, so you are not brushing on a separate paste for the joints it is intended for. Rosin flux is the electronics and non-potable sheet metal type, not the acid paste plumbers use on potable copper.
6) What jobs is leaded rosin core solder still the right choice for?
Non-potable work. Since the 21212 contains lead and is barred from drinking water lines, its place is things like non-potable drain and waste joints, sheet metal and gutter seams, and electrical or electronic connections where rosin flux is the correct flux. Anything carrying water people drink takes a lead-free solder.
7) How much solder is in a 1 lb spool of Oatey 21212, and is it solid metal wire?
One pound per spool, sold as a single model, part number 21212. The wire itself is metal, a tin-lead alloy with a rosin core running through it.
