OATEY 50193 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can OATEY 50193 40/60 solder be used on potable water lines?
No. The 50193 wire solder contains lead and is not for use on drinking water lines. For domestic water piping you need a lead-free solder. Use the 40/60 only on non-potable work such as drain, waste and vent, or other non-drinking-water applications.
2) Is there any state where OATEY 50193 solder cannot be sold or used?
Yes. The 50193 leaded wire solder cannot be sold or used in Indiana or Pennsylvania. If your job is in either state, specify a lead-free solder instead.
3) What is the melting range of OATEY 40/60 acid core solder?
The 40/60 alloy melts across 361 to 460 degrees F. That wider pasty range gives you more working time as the joint cools, which is why plumbers reach for 40/60 on larger diameter or vertical joints. By comparison a 50/50 alloy runs 361 to 421 degrees F and sets up faster.
4) What is the difference between 40/60 and 50/50 solder?
It is the tin to lead ratio. The 40/60 alloy is 40 percent tin and 60 percent lead; a 50/50 alloy is half tin and half lead. The lower tin content in 40/60 widens the melt range (361 to 460 F versus 361 to 421 F), so it stays workable longer. Both are leaded and neither belongs on a drinking water line.
5) Does acid core solder still need separate flux?
The 50193 is an acid core wire, meaning the flux is carried inside the wire itself, so it is intended for use without a separate paste flux on non-electrical plumbing and sheet metal work. Note that acid core is corrosive and should never be used on electrical or electronic connections, where rosin core is the correct choice.
