OATEY 53016 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can OATEY 53016 solder be used on drinking water lines?
No. The 53016 is a leaded solder, 40% tin and 60% lead, and it is not for use on potable (drinking) water lines. Use it only on non-potable work. For any domestic water piping you need a lead-free solder instead.
2) Is OATEY 53016 leaded solder legal to buy in my state?
The 53016 cannot be sold or used in Indiana or Pennsylvania. Everywhere else it ships as a standard leaded 40/60 solder, but it stays off potable water piping regardless of state.
3) What is the melting range of OATEY 40/60 solder?
The 40/60 alloy melts across 361 to 460 degrees F. That wide pasty range is why it behaves differently from a eutectic-leaning alloy: it stays slushy through a span rather than going liquid at one point, so give the joint time at heat before you move it.
4) Should I use leaded 40/60 solder or a lead-free solder for my job?
It comes down to what the joint carries. The OATEY 53016 at 40% tin / 60% lead is restricted to non-potable work and barred from sale or use in Indiana and Pennsylvania. Any domestic water line, or any job inspected to potable water rules, needs a lead-free solder. Leaded 40/60 remains common for electrical, sheet metal, and non-potable repair work.
5) What does the rosin core in OATEY 53016 solder do, and do I still need separate flux?
Rosin core means the flux is carried inside the solder wire, so it is released as the solder melts and cleans the joint as you go. That makes it suited to electrical and electronic-style work and non-potable soldering where you do not want to brush on a separate acid flux. For plumbing joints, most installers still clean and flux the fitting separately for a reliable wet-out.
