OATEY 30925 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Oatey 30925 green cement be used to join ABS pipe to PVC pipe?
That's exactly what the Oatey 30925 green transition cement is for. It solvent welds ABS to PVC in non-pressure transition joints up to 6 inch diameter, which is the usual situation when an ABS-plumbed building ties into a PVC local sewer. It is a DWV-pipe product only, so do not use it on pressure lines.
2) Will a plumbing inspector accept green transition cement on an ABS to PVC joint?
The 30925 green cement is code-approved for solvent welding ABS to PVC, meets ASTM D3138 and complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements. The green color is what inspectors look for on a transition joint, since it visibly identifies the joint as made with the correct transition cement rather than straight ABS or PVC cement.
3) Can I use green transition cement on a pressurized water line or a hot water line?
No. The 30925 is rated for non-pressure DWV transition joints only, so keep it off supply and pressure piping. Maximum use temperature is 60 degrees C, which suits drain, waste and vent service, not hot pressurized water. For pressure PVC work you need a pressure-rated PVC cement and primer instead.
4) What temperature can I apply Oatey 30925 transition cement at? Is it OK for cold weather work?
Recommended application range on the 30925 is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). Below 40 F you are outside the recommendation, so for winter work in an unheated crawlspace or an outdoor trench, warm the pipe and fittings and keep the can indoors between joints, or schedule the tie-in for the warmer part of the day.
5) Do I need a primer with Oatey ABS to PVC green transition cement?
The 30925 is a one-step transition cement and no separate primer is called out for it. Clean and dry both pipe ends, deburr, then apply the green cement. Note it is medium viscosity, which fills gaps better and gives you more working time on a larger transition joint than a thin, fast-set cement.
6) How much cement is in the Oatey 30925 can and how far does a 16 oz can go?
The 30925 is a 16 oz (pint) can, listed at 0.034 cubic feet volume and 1.15 lb product weight. A pint is the size most crews carry for a handful of transition joints up to 6 inch; for a single 3 or 4 inch sewer tie-in it is more than enough, and the pint can comes with a dauber sized for larger pipe.
