OATEY 30834 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use Oatey 30834 clear cement on ABS, PVC and CPVC, or do I need separate cements for each?
One can covers all three. The Oatey 30834 all-purpose clear cement solvent welds ABS, PVC and CPVC, so a service truck can carry a single can instead of three. It works on all schedules and classes of those pipes and fittings up to 6 inch diameter with an interference fit.
2) Is this cement approved for potable water lines or just drain waste and vent?
Both. The 30834 is listed for DWV, potable water and irrigation applications, and it complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the standard a potable water joint is judged against.
3) How cold can it be when I glue pipe with Oatey 30834?
Recommended application range is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). Below 40 F you are outside the recommended window, so for winter trench work or an unheated crawlspace either tent and heat the area or use a cement rated for cold weather application.
4) Do I still need a primer with this clear cement?
The 30834 is a cement, not a cement-and-primer in one, and only the dauber comes in the can. On PVC and CPVC pressure work, code bodies and most inspectors call for a separate purple primer before the cement, so order primer alongside it. ABS DWV joints are normally made with cement alone.
5) Why pick a clear cement over purple-primed or colored cement for exposed plumbing?
Clear leaves no colored ring on the fitting, so it is the choice where the pipe is visible, in a finished mechanical room, a tenant space, or exposed irrigation risers. The tradeoff: an inspector cannot see at a glance that a joint was cemented, so where visual proof of application is wanted, a colored cement is easier to pass. The 30834 is clear.
6) Will a medium viscosity cement work on loose-fitting large diameter fittings?
Medium viscosity is the point of the 30834. It fills gaps and gives more working time than a thin bodied cement, which helps on bigger interference-fit joints and on 4 and 6 inch DWV hubs where you need seconds to seat and quarter-turn the fitting. It is rated to 6 inch diameter.
7) What ASTM standards does Oatey 30834 cement meet for inspection?
It meets ASTM D2564 (PVC solvent cement), D2235 (ABS solvent cement) and F493 (CPVC solvent cement). That trio is why a single can passes on PVC, ABS and CPVC joints rather than needing a material-specific product for each submittal.
8) Can this cement be used on hot water CPVC lines?
Yes for CPVC, which is the material used on hot water distribution, and the 30834 meets ASTM F493 for CPVC solvent welding. Maximum use temperature on record is 60 degrees C.
9) Is Oatey 30834 the right cement for standardizing across a property or facility?
It is a reasonable single-SKU standard for an MRO stockroom, because one all-purpose can covers ABS drain, PVC drain and water, and CPVC hot and cold, up to 6 inch. The caveats to document in your spec: application only between 40 and 110 F, and a separate primer still needed on PVC and CPVC pressure joints.
10) How much cement is in the can and how far does a 16 oz size go?
The 30834 is a 16 oz (pint) can, listed at 1.21 lbs product weight. A pint is the common size for a full rough-in or repipe where a plumber is running a lot of joints in one visit; smaller quarter-pint and half-pint cans are the usual choice for a service van doing single repairs, since opened cement thickens over time.
