OATEY 30818 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How cold can it be to use Oatey 30818 cement outside?
Down to 40 degrees F (4 degrees C), with an upper limit of 110 degrees F (43 degrees C). Below 40 the cure slows and the joint quality suffers, so on a cold morning keep the can inside the truck cab and warm the fittings before you make up joints. That temperature window is the application range, not the service range.
2) Is this Oatey clear cement approved for potable water lines?
Yes. The 30818 all-purpose clear cement complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements and is listed for potable water as well as DWV and irrigation. It also meets ASTM D2564 (PVC), D2235 (ABS) and F493 (CPVC), which are the three cement standards an inspector will look for on a mixed-material job.
3) Do I still need primer with Oatey all-purpose clear cement?
The 30818 is a cement, not a primer, and it does not replace one. On PVC and CPVC pressure work, code generally calls for a primer meeting ASTM F656 before the cement, and the cement itself is certified to ASTM D2564 and F493 on that basis. ABS joints are the exception and are normally made without primer. Buy the primer separately and follow whatever your local jurisdiction enforces.
4) Is clear cement OK for ABS drain lines, or does the inspector want yellow or black?
The 30818 is formulated to weld ABS and meets ASTM D2235, the ABS cement standard. Where jurisdictions get particular is color coding: some require a specific cement color on ABS or on ABS-to-PVC transitions so the joint can be identified visually at inspection. The chemistry here is compliant either way, so check what your local code enforces on color before you use clear on a DWV rough-in that will be inspected.
5) How much pipe will a 4 oz can of Oatey 30818 do?
The 4 oz can holds about 0.012 cubic feet of cement and weighs 0.35 lb. That's the handy size with the dauber in the lid, sized for a repair call or a handful of joints rather than a full rough-in. For a whole house DWV stack or a commercial run, step up to a pint or quart can with a larger applicator so you aren't fighting a small dauber on 3 and 4 inch fittings.
