1) Can I use Oatey 30847 clear cement on PVC, CPVC and ABS, or do I need a separate can for each?
One can covers all three. The Oatey 30847 all-purpose clear cement solvent welds ABS, PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings, so a plumber running a mixed DWV job doesn't need three separate cements on the truck. It works on all schedules and classes of those materials up to 6 inch diameter with an interference fit, and the dauber is in the lid.
2) What is the largest pipe size Oatey 30847 all-purpose cement is rated for?
Up to 6 inch diameter, on all schedules and classes of ABS, PVC and CPVC with an interference fit. That covers typical DWV stacks and mains in residential and light commercial work. Anything above 6 inches is outside what this cement is rated for, so a large-diameter job needs a heavy-bodied cement sized for it.
3) Can I glue PVC pipe with Oatey 30847 when it is 35 degrees outside?
No. The recommended application range for the 30847 clear cement is 40F to 110F (4C to 43C). Below 40F the solvent flashes off too slowly and the joint doesn't develop properly. On a cold morning, warm the cement and the fittings, or wait until the ambient temperature comes up into range before you make up joints.
4) Is Oatey 30847 cement approved for potable water lines, not just drain lines?
Yes, both. The 30847 is listed for DWV, potable water and irrigation applications, and it complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the standard a plumbing inspector looks for on a potable water joint. It also meets ASTM D2564 (PVC), D2235 (ABS) and F493 (CPVC).

The maximum use temperature for joints made with this all-purpose cement is 60C (140F). That is the service ceiling on the finished joint, distinct from the 40F to 110F range for applying it. Keep hot water and process lines under that figure.
9) Does the clear Oatey cement leave a visible mark on exposed PVC?
The 30847 is a clear cement, so it doesn't leave the purple or orange staining a colored cement does. That's the reason to pick it for exposed or finished work, sprinkler manifolds, or anywhere an inspector or an owner will see the joints. If your jurisdiction requires a visibly colored cement for inspection, use a colored one instead.
