1) Will the Oatey 42078 shower drain work with a preformed fiberglass or acrylic shower base?
That's exactly what the 42078 is built for. It's a two-piece drain for preformed shower stall bases, with a fiber and rubber washer that seals the drain body airtight against the base. The body clamps the base between the top flange and the lower nut, then solvent welds to 2 inch PVC DWV pipe below. It isn't a drain for a mortared or hot-mopped tile pan.
2) What size and type of pipe does the Oatey 42078 shower drain connect to?
It solvent welds over 2 inch PVC Schedule 40 DWV pipe. The pipe is held with a mechanically compressed gasket, so no caulking is needed at that joint. You'll need PVC primer and cement to make the weld; those aren't included.

A 4-1/4 inch round snap-tite strainer in UltraShine PVD polished brass is included. 4) Does the strainer go on before or after the shower base is set?
After. The body is installed and sealed to the base first, then the strainer snaps onto the drain body. That lets you keep the finished brass cover out of the way (and out of the mud and cement) until the job is buttoned up, and it's also how you swap covers later without touching the drain body.
