1) Does the Oatey 43578 general purpose drain connect to 2 inch or 3 inch ABS pipe?
Both, depending on how you pipe it. The 43578 solvent welds inside 3 inch ABS Sch. 40 pipe, or over the outside of 2 inch ABS Sch. 40 pipe. That gives you one drain body for either rough-in, so you don't have to know the stub size before you order. It's ABS, so it solvent welds to ABS DWV only, not PVC.
2) Can I use the Oatey 43578 drain in a shower or anywhere with a waterproof membrane?
No. The 43578 is a general purpose drain, built for situations where a waterproof membrane is not required. There's no clamping ring or membrane flange on it, so it won't work for a tiled shower pan or any assembly where a liner has to be sealed to the drain. For those, you need a shower drain with a clamping collar. Use the 43578 for floor drains, utility rooms, mechanical rooms, and outdoor areas piped in ABS.
3) Does the Oatey 43578 drain include a trap or P-trap?
No trap is included. The 43578 is the drain body and the 4 inch stainless strainer only. The drain line itself, including the trap, is a separate purchase. Budget for a 2 inch or 3 inch ABS trap plus the pipe and fittings when you price the job.
4) Will the Oatey 43578 ABS drain glue to PVC pipe?
No. The 43578 body is ABS, and ABS cement bonds ABS to ABS. If your rough-in is PVC DWV, you need the PVC version of this drain rather than a transition at the drain. Trying to solvent weld ABS to PVC with either cement is not a joint you want under a slab.
5) Is the Oatey 43578 drain rated for outdoor use?
Yes, indoors or outdoors. The body is ABS and the strainer is stainless steel, so an exterior slab, a patio area drain, or an equipment pad is within what it's meant for. Just remember it needs ABS DWV pipe to solvent weld to.
6) How big is the strainer on the Oatey 43578, and does it come off for cleaning?
The strainer is 4 inch diameter stainless steel and screws on, so it backs right out with a screwdriver when you need to rod or snake the line. That's the practical difference from a snap-in grate: on a property with hair, grit, or grease loading the drain, maintenance can pull it, clean it, and put it back without disturbing the drain body. Stainless also means it won't rust out on an exterior drain the way a plated grate does.
