OATEY 43583 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Oatey 43583 general purpose drain work on 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe?
Both. The 43583 drain body solvent welds inside 4 inch PVC Sch. 40 pipe, or slips over the outside of 3 inch PVC Sch. 40 pipe. Same part either way, so you pick the connection when you get to the riser instead of ordering a size. It also fits over 3 inch or inside 4 inch DWV pipe.
2) Can I use the Oatey 43583 drain in a shower or on a waterproof membrane floor?
No. The 43583 is built for openings where a waterproof membrane is not required, so it has no clamping ring and no weep provision to tie a membrane into the drain. For a tiled shower, a mortar bed, or anywhere a pan liner has to be sealed, you need a clamping ring shower drain instead. Use the 43583 for utility rooms, garages, mechanical rooms, and similar unlined slabs.
3) Does the Oatey 43583 drain come with a P-trap?
No trap is included with the 43583. It is the drain body and strainer only, so the trap and the riser to it are separate. Plan on a PVC trap and Sch. 40 pipe sized to whichever connection you use, 3 inch outside or 4 inch inside. Solvent cement is also on you, since the drain is a solvent weld connection.
4) Is the strainer on the Oatey 43583 removable for snaking the drain line?
Yes. The stainless steel strainer threads on and screws off, which opens the drain line for cleaning or rodding without cutting anything. That matters if you maintain floor drains that catch lint, hair, or debris on a schedule, because clearing one is a screwdriver job rather than a plumbing call.
5) Can the Oatey 43583 PVC drain be installed outdoors?
Yes, indoors or out. The body is PVC and the strainer is stainless steel, so neither piece is going to rust out in a patio, courtyard, or exterior stair landing installation the way a plated steel strainer would.
6) How much does the Oatey 43583 drain weigh for a bulk MRO order?
Each 43583 drain weighs 0.663 pounds with a volume of 0.044. Light enough that stocking a dozen across a property portfolio is not a freight consideration, which is the usual reason a maintenance shop keeps spares of a common floor drain on the shelf.
