1) Will the Oatey 43579 drain connect to 2 inch or 3 inch PVC pipe?
Both, and it's the same body either way. The 43579 general purpose drain solvent welds inside 3 inch PVC Sch. 40 pipe, or over the outside of 2 inch PVC Sch. 40 pipe. It also fits over 2 inch or inside 4 in. DWV pipe. So you pick the connection based on what's already stubbed up, no adapter or bushing needed for those sizes.
2) Can I use the Oatey 43579 PVC drain in a shower or under a waterproof membrane?
No. The 43579 is built for situations where a waterproof membrane is not required, so it has no clamping ring or weep system to tie a pan liner or hot-mop into. For a tiled shower floor or any assembly with a membrane, you need a shower pan drain with a clamping collar instead. Use the 43579 for general purpose floor drainage, indoors or out.
3) Is the Oatey 43579 drain strainer removable for snaking the line?
Yes. The 4 inch diameter stainless steel strainer screws on and unscrews, which opens the drain line for cleaning or rodding without disturbing the solvent welded body. That matters on a maintenance drain that collects hair, sand, or debris, since you can service it with a screwdriver instead of cutting into the piping.
4) Does the Oatey 43579 come with the strainer, or is that ordered separately?
The 4 inch stainless steel Screw-Tite strainer is included with the drain. What is not included is the drain line itself, so you supply the PVC Sch. 40 or DWV pipe and solvent cement to make the connection.
