OATEY 34161 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Oatey 34161 pan plastic or metal, and does that matter for a gas water heater?
It is a plastic pan. Plastic is fine under electric water heaters and under most residential installs, but for gas fired heaters some local codes and manufacturers require a metal pan because of the burner and flame at the base. Check the heater manufacturer's instruction and your local inspector before putting a plastic pan under a gas unit.
2) Does the Oatey 34161 water heater pan come with a drain fitting or adapter?
The 34161 is sold as the pan itself. Plan on supplying the drain adapter and the drain line separately, sized to the pan's drain opening, so the pan can discharge to an approved location rather than just hold a leak.
3) I manage apartments and replace water heaters often. Can I standardize on the Oatey 34161?
For units with tanks under 20 inches at the base, the 34161 works as a standard spec item. It is a single model number with one configuration, so there is no size or finish decision to get wrong on a reorder. Larger 50 and 75 gallon tanks commonly exceed 20 inches at the foot, so keep a larger diameter pan on the shelf for those.
4) How much does the Oatey 20 inch plastic pan weigh?
About 1.75 lbs, which is light enough that one person can slide it into place and set the tank on it alone. The pan's stated volume is 0.248, useful if you are palletizing or shipping several at once for a multi-unit job.
5) What is the manufacturer part number for the Oatey 20 inch plastic water heater pan?
Oatey part number 34161. Order by that number to get the 20 inch plastic pan; Oatey's pan line runs through several diameters under adjacent numbers, so the full five digits matter.
