The Oatey 34082 pan has a 22 inch base diameter, which covers most residential 40 and 50 gallon water heaters since typical tank diameters run under 22 inches. Measure the tank's outside diameter at its widest point, including any jacket insulation, before committing. If the heater measures wider than 22 inches, you need a larger pan.

It ships with a PVC adapter sized 1 inch to 1-1/2 inch, so the pan drains into PVC pipe in that range. The connection type is PVC, so a copper or CPVC drain run needs a transition fitting you supply.

Metal holds its shape under the dead weight of a full tank and won't soften near a gas draft hood, which is why it gets specified in garages and mechanical rooms. Plastic pans are lighter and cheaper but can deform under a heavy tank. At 1.45 lbs, the aluminum pan is still light enough for one person to set.

The pan comes with its 1 inch to 1-1/2 inch PVC adapter, so the pan-side fitting is covered. You supply the PVC drain pipe and fittings to run the line to an approved termination point, plus solvent cement and primer. Nothing is included for mounting the heater itself.
