1) Can I use Oatey clear primer on CPVC, or is it PVC only?
Oatey 30774 industrial grade clear primer works on both PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings. It's specifically recommended for commercial and large diameter thermoplastic systems, including CPVC Sch. 40 and Sch. 80. It cleans surface dirt, grease and grime off the pipe while pre-softening it so the solvent cement can make a proper weld.
2) How cold can it be outside and still use Oatey 30774 primer?
Application range runs from -15 F up to 110 F (-26 C to 43 C), so it's usable well below freezing. That's why it's called out for cold weather work. Once the joint is made and cured, the system tolerates service up to 93 C. Below -15 F you're outside the stated application window.
3) Will clear primer stain the pipe or the surrounding finish work?
It's clear, not purple, and won't stain most surfaces. That's the practical reason to reach for it on exposed runs, finished mechanical rooms, or anywhere the pipe stays visible. The tradeoff: an inspector who wants visual proof that primer was applied can't see clear primer on the joint. On jobs where the code official requires visible evidence of priming, use a purple primer instead.
4) Is Oatey 30774 primer approved for potable water lines?
It complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the drinking water standard, so it's suitable for potable CPVC water piping. It also meets ASTM F656, the standard specification for primers used on PVC systems, and it's certified to UL Greenguard Gold for low chemical emissions.
5) Do I still need cement if I buy this primer, or does it glue the joint by itself?
Primer alone doesn't make a joint. The 30774 is a primer-cleaner: it strips dirt, grease and grime and softens the pipe surface so the solvent weld takes. You apply it first, then a separate PVC or CPVC solvent cement rated for the pipe and diameter you're joining. Order the matching cement at the same time or the job stops at the first fitting.
6) Does this Oatey primer meet low-VOC rules in California?
Yes. The 30774 is a low VOC primer that meets South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule 1171/M24 requirements, so it's legal to use in SCAQMD territory and in the other districts that follow that limit. For institutional and government specs that call out low-emitting materials, it also carries UL Greenguard Gold certification.
7) Will this primer work on ABS drain pipe?
No. The 30774 is formulated for PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings. ABS drain, waste and vent uses its own black ABS cement and is not primed with a PVC primer. If your DWV stack is black ABS rather than white PVC, this is the wrong product for the joint.
