OATEY 30771 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will purple primer satisfy an inspector who requires visible primer verification?
That is the reason for the tint. The purple color on Oatey 30771 is there for jurisdictions where plumbing code requires the inspector to see that primer was applied before the joint was cemented. Clear primer does the same chemical job but leaves no evidence at the joint.
2) Is Oatey 30771 primer low VOC and acceptable in California air districts like SCAQMD?
Yes. The 30771 purple primer is a low VOC formula that meets South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, so it can be specified on jobs in those districts.
3) Does this purple primer meet ASTM F656 and is it approved for potable water lines?
The 30771 primer meets ASTM Standard F656 for PVC/CPVC primers and complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the standard referenced for potable water system components. Oatey solvent cements and primers are also certified to UL GREENGUARD Gold.
4) Can I use Oatey purple primer in cold weather?
Yes, the 30771 industrial grade purple primer is called out for cold weather applications. In low temperatures the pipe surface softens more slowly, and this aggressive formula is intended for that condition.
5) How big is the 32 oz can of Oatey 30771 primer and what does it weigh for shipping?
It is a quart (32 oz) can. Oatey lists the product weight at 2.05 and the volume at 0.066, which is what matters when you are palletizing or shipping multiples of a flammable solvent product.
6) Which Oatey part number is the 32 oz industrial grade purple primer?
The manufacturer part number is 30771. That is the 32 oz industrial grade purple primer, carried under UPC 038753307718. Use the 30771 number when matching a spec that calls out Oatey industrial grade purple primer rather than the regular-grade or clear versions.
