OATEY 30758 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use Oatey purple primer on ABS drain pipe?
No. The Oatey 30758 purple primer is for PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings only, and Oatey specifically does not recommend it on ABS piping installations. ABS joints are made with ABS cement and no primer, so if the run you are working on is black ABS DWV, this is the wrong can.
2) Will purple primer pass inspection where the code requires proof primer was used?
That is exactly what the purple tint is for. Inspectors in jurisdictions that require primer verification look for visible purple at the joint, and the Oatey 30758 leaves that mark. It also meets ASTM F656 for PVC primers and complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is what gets it accepted on potable water lines.
3) How cold can it be outside and still use Oatey purple primer?
Application range runs from 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 93 C at the upper use limit is a separate figure). Below 40 F the primer is outside its stated application window, so on a cold morning either warm the pipe and the can or wait for the temperature to come up. Above 110 F it is also out of range, which matters on a hot roof or an exposed trench in midsummer.
4) Is this low-VOC primer legal in California air quality districts?
Yes. The 30758 is a low-VOC formula that meets the South Coast Air Quality Management District 1171/M24 requirements, which is the rule most commonly cited on California jobs. It is also certified to UL Greenguard Gold, which helps on projects chasing indoor air quality credits.
5) What does purple primer actually do to the pipe before cementing?
Two things. It strips surface dirt, grease and grime off the pipe and fitting, and it pre-softens the PVC or CPVC surface so the solvent cement can fuse into it. That is what produces a fast, secure solvent weld instead of a joint that is only glued on the surface. Skipping primer on a pressure line is how you get weeping joints later.
6) Can I use this instead of a clear primer or a cleaner on exposed plumbing?
Only if the purple stain is acceptable. The Oatey 30758 is tinted purple and that color stays on the pipe, which is what inspectors want to see but is a problem on exposed white PVC where appearance matters. Where code does not require primer verification and the work is visible, a clear primer is the better call; where it does, use this.
7) Is the 32 oz size of Oatey purple primer the right one for a full DWV rough-in?
The 30758 is the quart, which is the size most crews carry for a full rough-in rather than a single repair. Net weight is 2.163 lb. It is listed for DWV pipe work and covers both PVC and CPVC, so one can handles the drain, waste and vent lines and the CPVC water lines on the same job.
