OATEY 30755 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Oatey 30755 purple primer be used on ABS pipe?
No. The Oatey 30755 purple primer is made for PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings, and Oatey specifically does not recommend it for ABS installations. ABS joints are made with ABS cement and generally need no primer, so use an ABS-specific product for those lines.
2) Will purple primer pass inspection where the code requires visible primer?
That's exactly what the purple tint is for. Many jurisdictions require an inspector to see evidence that primer was applied before the cement, and the 30755 leaves a visible purple ring at the joint. It also meets ASTM F656 and complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, and it's a low VOC formula meeting SCAQMD 1171/M24.
3) What temperature can I apply Oatey purple primer in?
Application range runs from 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). If you're working outdoors in winter below 40 F, the primer falls outside its stated application window. Finished joints are rated for use up to 93 degrees C.
4) What does purple primer actually do before I apply PVC cement?
It cleans and softens. The primer strips surface dirt, grease and grime off the pipe and fitting while pre-softening the plastic so the solvent cement can fuse the two surfaces into one weld. Skipping it on PVC or CPVC gives you a weaker joint and, in most jurisdictions, a failed inspection.
5) Is Oatey purple primer low VOC enough for California jobs?
Yes. The 30755 is a low VOC primer that meets the California South Coast Air Quality Management District 1171/M24 requirements. All Oatey solvent cement and primer products are also certified to UL Greenguard Gold, which matters on schools and healthcare work where indoor air quality is specified.
