1) Can I use Oatey 30753 clear primer on ABS pipe?
No. The Oatey 30753 clear primer is for PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings only, and is specifically not recommended for ABS installations. ABS joints are made with ABS cement and generally don't take a primer at all, so using this on a black ABS DWV system is the wrong call.
2) What temperature can I apply Oatey clear primer in?
Application range for the 30753 clear primer runs 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 C). Below 40 the solvent won't soften the pipe wall properly and the weld suffers; above 110 it flashes off too fast to do its job. The finished joint handles service temperatures up to 93 C.
3) Will clear primer stain finished walls or exposed pipe like purple primer does?
That's the reason to buy it. The 30753 is clear rather than purple, so it won't stain most surfaces, which matters on exposed DWV runs, finished mechanical rooms, and anywhere a tenant will see the pipe. The tradeoff is that inspectors in many jurisdictions want visible evidence that primer was used, and purple is what they look for, so confirm your inspector accepts clear before you commit a whole job to it.
4) What does the primer actually do before cementing PVC?
Two jobs. It strips surface dirt, grease and grime off the pipe and fitting, and it pre-softens the PVC or CPVC so the cement can fuse into the wall instead of sitting on top of it. That's what gives you a fast, secure solvent weld. Skip it on a pressure line and you're relying on a surface bond.
5) Is a 32 oz can of clear primer the right size for a full DWV rough-in?
