OATEY 84179 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 84179 cleanout connect to 4 inch ABS DWV pipe?
Yes. The 84179 has a 4 inch ABS hub base, so a 4 inch ABS DWV pipe slips into the hub and is solvent welded with ABS cement. It is an ABS-to-ABS connection only, so it is not the part to use on a PVC line.
2) Is the 84179 a general purpose floor cleanout or a heavy traffic one?
General purpose. Oatey lists the 84179 as a general purpose cleanout, which is the class used in mechanical rooms, closets, crawl spaces and light foot traffic areas. For a driveway, loading dock or anywhere vehicles roll over it, specify a cast iron duty rated cleanout instead.
3) Can I use the Oatey 84179 on a PVC drain line?
No. The base and the connection are both ABS, so it solvent welds only to ABS. Mixing ABS cement and PVC pipe is not an approved joint in most jurisdictions. On a PVC system, order the PVC hub version of the same cleanout.
4) What is the cover on the Oatey 84179 cleanout made of and how big is it?
It comes with a 6 inch nickel finish cover and a square ring. The 6 inch round cover over a 4 inch line gives you a wider bearing surface at the finished floor, and the nickel face is the usual choice where the cleanout lands in a visible area.
5) What part number do I order for the 4 inch ABS hub cleanout with the 6 inch nickel cover?
Oatey 84179. That single number covers the complete assembly: 4 inch ABS hub base, square ring, and 6 inch nickel cover. Nothing separate to add for the cover.
6) What is the square ring on this Oatey cleanout for?
The square ring is the frame that sits in the pour or the finished floor and carries the round nickel cover. Square ring bodies are the ones you want when the cleanout is being set into tile or a formed slab, because the straight edges line up with the grout joints and the form boards.
7) Will an ABS cleanout body hold up in a floor that gets washed down?
ABS is the standard DWV plastic for drainage bodies and handles routine wash water and drain chemicals without corroding, which is why it is used for the base here. The exposed wear point is the nickel cover, not the plastic. In a commercial kitchen or wash bay with vehicle or cart wheels crossing it, step up to a duty rated cleanout rather than a general purpose one.
