OATEY 74178 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size is the cover on the Oatey 74178 general purpose cleanout?
It comes with a 6 inch nickel bronze cover, paired with a square ring. The 6 inch round cover over a 4 inch pipe base gives you the access opening at the finished floor while the square ring sets the frame in the slab or tile.
2) Can I use the Oatey 74178 in a finished floor, or is it a rough-in only part?
It is a finished floor cleanout. The 4 inch PVC base ties into the drain line during rough-in and the 6 inch nickel bronze cover with square ring is the finish piece you see at floor level, which is why the cover is bronze rather than plastic.
3) What is the Oatey part number I should order for the 4 inch PVC cleanout with the 6 inch nickel bronze cover?
Order Oatey model 74178. That is the manufacturer part number for the 4 inch PVC pipe base general purpose cleanout with the 6 inch nickel bronze cover and square ring, supplied as a complete assembly.
4) Is the Oatey 74178 cleanout cover square or round, and does that matter for tile work?
The cover itself is a 6 inch round nickel bronze plug cover, but it ships with a square ring. The square ring is what tile setters usually want, since the straight edges line up with grout joints instead of forcing a radius cut around a round frame.
5) How much does the Oatey 74178 cleanout weigh for shipping or a material takeoff?
Listed product weight is 4 pounds, with a volume of 0.147. Most of that weight is the nickel bronze cover and ring rather than the PVC base.
